Job description

Macroeconomist Intern
The Bezos Earth Fund is a fast-growing philanthropy dedicated to combating climate change and protecting nature. To inform its strategy and investment decisions, the Bezos Earth Fund is committed to using the best available information on the challenges the world faces; the transformations required to address them, and the effectiveness of interventions to overcome barriers and drive systemic change. The Fund is interested in not only assessing how its support is having impact but also the ways in which transformative change can be created and maintained to address the Fund's strategic priorities.
Key Responsibilities
The Bezos Earth Fund is seeking an intern to coordinate meetings and convenings, conduct research and analysis, and otherwise support our program in macroeconomics. The position requires an organized researcher to coordinate conferences in the Spring and Fall, schedule subgroup meetings, follow up with subgroup leads and individual teams, and keep various workstreams on schedule through to publication in a Green Macroeconomic Modeling Initiative (GMMI) special issue.
This work will support the GMMI, which the Bezos Earth Fund helped to establish and coordinate for the past 2+ years. The Initiative aims to expand and strengthen the community of practice whose work is used by decision makers in ministries of finance and other similar decision-making entities. The Initiative currently has over 30 teams from around the world with deep expertise in diverse modeling techniques which the Macroeconomist Intern will interact with and learn from.
This position is short term (six months) with potential for extension, and is part time (approximately 20 hours per week). The expected workload will require a little more than half of the time on administrative tasks and the remaining time on data analysis and programmatic work. It will report to the Program Manager & Economist.
The Intern will have the following responsibilities:
  • Organize the various teams around key workstreams that the steering committee designate.
  • Schedule multiple meetings across various time zones, often several at once.
  • Keep a detailed account of the status of the various workstreams in the portfolio and follow up with teams as needed to keep these workstreams running smoothly.
  • Communicate with teams to ensure good data reporting, including following up with teams that have not submitted data, or who might have other data issues.
  • Collect and synthesize asymmetric data from multiple sources.
  • Run simple checks on data submissions to catch any errors that might want attention of the teams, following up with them to confirm the accuracy of their results, and implementing fixes to maintain accuracy of the master dataset.
  • Coordinate biennial conferences in the Spring and Fall for the GMMI, in collaboration with the steering committee, the program manager, and other partners.
  • Work directly with the Program Manager & Economist to perform other duties as assigned.

Education
  • Experience managing large projects is required.
  • Prior research and analysis experience is required.
  • An interdisciplinary background and knowledge of climate issues is preferred.
  • Current master's or PhD degree program in economics, environmental science, engineering, or public policy is preferred.

Skills and abilities:
  • Excellent writing, editing, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Great attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, and occasionally work under tight deadlines
  • Strong analytical and research skills and proven ability to deliver high-quality work
  • Demonstrated passion for the Bezos Earth Fund's mission
  • Self-starter with ability to juggle multiple assignments at one time
  • Friendly, positive demeanor and determined attitude

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • May require extended hours for urgent issues or to meet established deadlines.
  • Interns are expected to be onsite on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, where they'll have opportunities for mentorship, cross-functional learning, relationship building, shared team experiences, including catered lunches and other staff engagement activities.

Salary: $35/hr
