What is an evangelist?

There are evangelist jobs in a variety of industries. Technology evangelists, for example, use sales and marketing skills to promote the use of a particular technology. A developer evangelist is a spokesperson for a company and its technical staff with the goal of communicating their software programs or applications to the developer community. Platform evangelists promote new digital platforms for a company through traditional and web-based avenues. A startup evangelist builds the awareness of startups using strategies such as crowdfunding or paid promotion. Policy evangelists promote various public policies and connect with relevant industry leaders to improve their efforts and reach. Blockchain evangelists raise awareness of blockchain platforms and companies, which requires in-depth knowledge of the industry including Ethereum and Bitcoin.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an evangelist?

To thrive as an Evangelist, you need deep subject matter expertise, strong public speaking abilities, and experience in community engagement, often supported by a relevant degree or industry background. Familiarity with digital communication platforms, social media tools, and content creation software is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills, authenticity, and persuasive storytelling set standout Evangelists apart. These skills are crucial for effectively building trust, fostering enthusiasm, and driving adoption or support for a product, service, or cause.

What are some common challenges an evangelist faces when engaging with diverse audiences?

Evangelists often encounter the challenge of tailoring their message to resonate with audiences that have varying levels of familiarity with the product or technology. Communicating complex concepts in an accessible and engaging manner requires strong public speaking and adaptability skills. Additionally, building trust and credibility across different communities takes time and consistent effort. Evangelists frequently collaborate with product, marketing, and engineering teams to ensure their outreach is aligned with organizational goals and audience needs.

What is the difference between Evangelist vs Developer Advocate?

AspectEvangelistDeveloper Advocate
CredentialsTechnical background, communication skillsTechnical expertise, community engagement experience

What are the jobs of an evangelist?

An evangelist promotes a company's products, services, or ideas to increase awareness and adoption. They often engage with communities, deliver presentations, create content, and build relationships to spread their message effectively. Strong communication skills and industry knowledge are essential for success in this role.

What degree do you need to be an evangelist?

There is no specific degree required to become an evangelist, as the role emphasizes strong communication, presentation skills, and expertise in the relevant field. Many evangelists have backgrounds in marketing, communications, or technical disciplines, but experience and passion are often more important than formal education.

Job description

Synthesia is the world’s leading AI video platform for business, used by over 90% of the Fortune 100. Founded in 2017, the company is headquartered in London, with offices and teams across Europe and the US.

As AI continues to shape the way we live and work, Synthesia develops products to enhance visual communication and enterprise skill development, helping people work better and stay at the center of successful organizations.

Following our recent Series E funding round, where we raised $200 million, our valuation stands at $4 billion. Our total funding exceeds $530 million from premier investors including Accel, NVentures (Nvidia's VC arm), Kleiner Perkins, GV, and Evantic Capital, alongside the founders and operators of Stripe, Datadog, Miro, and Webflow.

The role...

Synthesia's API and platform capabilities are quickly becoming the way developers embed AI video into their own products — automated training pipelines, localization workflows, customer-facing apps, and more. We're looking for our first Developer Evangelist to make sure the developer world knows it, understands it, and gets building.

This is a builder-and-storyteller role. You'll be the face and voice of the Synthesia API to the outside world — writing, coding, speaking, and showing up wherever developers already are — while also being the internal champion who brings their feedback back into the product. You won't just talk about what's possible with Synthesia; you'll build the sample apps, tutorials, and demos that prove it, and you'll do it consistently enough that developers start to recognize your name before they recognize the logo.

You'll be part of the Developer Services team and work closely with Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Developer Support to turn technical capability into developer adoption.

What You'll Do

Create technical content that developers actually use

  • Write blog posts, tutorials, and how-to guides that show real, working integrations — not just feature announcements

  • Build and maintain sample apps, starter kits, and code snippets across common languages and frameworks

  • Produce video walkthroughs and livestreams using Synthesia's own product wherever it makes sense to "eat our own dog food"

  • Keep a fast, honest cadence — regular, dependable output builds more trust than occasional big launches

Show up where developers are

  • Represent Synthesia at conferences, meetups, hackathons, and webinars — as a speaker, workshop host, and booth presence

  • Run livestreams and community AMAs that go deep on real implementation questions, not marketing talking points

  • Build relationships with individual developers, technical bloggers, and community leaders who influence adoption

  • Travel as needed to be physically present in the communities that matter most to our growth

Be the credible technical voice

  • Get hands-on with the Synthesia API well enough to build things yourself, debug alongside developers, and speak with authority — not from a script

  • Earn trust the way any evangelist does: by being genuinely useful before asking for anything in return

  • Play the long game — plant seeds in developer communities today that turn into adoption months or years down the line

Close the loop with product

  • Channel developer feedback, friction points, and feature requests back to Product and Engineering in a structured way

  • Partner with Developer Support and Documentation to identify where the API's rough edges are creating support burden or lost adoption

  • Help prioritize the developer experience roadmap based on what you're hearing on the ground

Build the flywheel

  • Grow and nurture channels — Discord/Slack community, developer newsletter, social — where developers can find each other and find help

  • Identify and cultivate community advocates and early power users who can become case studies, co-speakers, or contributors

  • Measure what's working (content engagement, API sign-ups, community growth, sentiment) and adjust the playbook accordingly

About you...
  • Experience in developer relations, developer advocacy, technical evangelism, or a similar hybrid technical/communication role — ideally at a platform, API-first, or infrastructure company

  • Genuinely hands-on: comfortable writing code, working with APIs and SDKs, and building demo apps yourself, not just narrating what engineering built

  • A strong, authentic communicator across formats — written, live, and on stage — who can make technical concepts land with a developer audience

  • Comfortable with regular travel and public speaking; energized by meeting developers in person, not just online

  • A track record of sustained output (blog, video, or community content) rather than one-off campaigns — evangelism is a long game, and consistency is what earns trust

  • Skilled at listening as much as broadcasting: you can sit in a developer's frustration and turn it into a clear, actionable signal for the product team

  • Comfortable operating with a lot of autonomy in a fast-moving, still-forming function

  • Bonus: existing following or credibility within a developer community relevant to Synthesia's platform (video, AI/ML, automation, or enterprise software)

The good stuff..

In addition to being a part of a great team, working in a fun and innovative environment, we offer:

  • A competitive salary + stock options in our fast-growing Series E startup

  • Hybrid working environment or remote friendly

  • 100% Medical, Dental & Vision

  • 401k Plan

  • Paid parental leave

  • 25 days of annual leave + Public holidays + paid sick leave

  • Fun culture with regular socials

  • A generous referral scheme

  • A brand new computer + monitor

  • Budget and support for conference travel, community events, and content production
