What does an estimation manager do?

An Estimation Manager is responsible for overseeing the process of calculating the costs, resources, and time required for a project, usually in industries like construction, engineering, or manufacturing. They lead a team of estimators to analyze project specifications, review blueprints, and gather data to produce accurate cost estimates. Estimation Managers also coordinate with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure that estimates align with project requirements and budgets. Their work is essential for bidding on projects, setting budgets, and ensuring projects are financially viable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an estimation manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Estimation Manager, you need a strong background in cost estimation, project management, and industry-specific knowledge, often supported by a degree in engineering, construction management, or a related field. Familiarity with estimation software (like CostX, Sage Estimating, or Bluebeam), spreadsheets, and sometimes relevant certifications such as AACE or RICS is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, leadership, and effective communication skills help you lead teams and clearly convey complex cost data to stakeholders. These skills are essential for producing accurate estimates, managing risks, and ensuring project profitability and client satisfaction.

How does an estimation manager typically collaborate with project managers and other departments during the bidding process?

An Estimation Manager works closely with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to gather accurate project requirements, assess risks, and develop comprehensive cost estimates. Regular meetings and clear communication are essential to ensure all departments are aligned on project scope, timelines, and resource needs. By facilitating collaboration, the Estimation Manager helps create competitive bids that reflect both client expectations and company capabilities.

What is the difference between Estimation Manager vs Estimator?

AspectEstimation ManagerEstimator
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, or related field; certifications like CPC or AACE are commonOften holds similar degrees or certifications; may have less managerial training
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, oversees multiple projects, and manages estimation processesFocuses on preparing cost estimates for individual projects
Industry UsageUsed in construction, engineering, and large-scale project firmsCommonly found in similar industries, often as a team member

The Estimation Manager oversees the entire estimation process and manages teams, while the Estimator focuses on preparing specific project estimates. Both roles require relevant credentials and industry experience, but the manager has broader responsibilities and leadership duties.

Is estimating a stressful job?

Estimating as an Estimation Manager can be stressful due to tight deadlines, accuracy requirements, and the need to coordinate with multiple teams. The role demands attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and often involves managing large projects, which can contribute to work-related stress.

Job description

Estimating Manager
Location: Bartlett, IL
Salary: $90,000–$120,000 (based on experience and education)
Schedule: Full-time, M-F, flexible hours, 100% on-siteAbout the CompanyThis is a mid-sized, family-oriented printing and packaging manufacturer with over 35 years in business and a loyal, long-tenured team. They serve a broad commercial customer base and are known for quality, reliability, and a culture that genuinely takes care of its people. With a senior leader transitioning out over the next year, ownership is making a deliberate investment in the management structure to ensure nothing falls through the cracks. Why This Role Stands Out
  • Lead a five-person estimating team with real authority and ownership visibility
  • Direct involvement in quoting decisions that drive the business
  • Stable, family-run company with 35+ years of success and a culture that values its people
  • Planned leadership transition means this role is being built to last, not filled to bridge a gap
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) with company match
What You’ll Be Doing
  • Lead and oversee a team of five estimators across varying experience levels
  • Review, check, and approve estimates before they go to customers or ownership
  • Step in to produce estimates directly when workload or complexity requires it
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with customer estimating departments once accounts are active
  • Coordinate with project management to clarify job scope and ensure accurate handoffs
  • Manage team workflow and keep quote turnaround times on track
  • Work within a custom job management system covering estimating, order entry, and purchasing
  • Support ownership in reducing time spent on quote review as trust is established
What You Bring
  • BS/BA is preferred in Business, Operations, Graphics or related
  • 7–10+ years of estimating experience in printing, packaging, or a related finishing / converting environment
  • Prior supervisory or team lead experience required in estimating. This is a management role first.
  • Strong math skills and the confidence to assess job complexity and margin independently
  • Clear, professional communication skills for direct customer interaction
  • Organized and detail-oriented with solid judgment on when to escalate vs. approve
  • Proficiency in Excel and Word. Experience with a job management or estimating system is a plus.

If you have a background in printing and packaging estimating and are ready to step into a leadership role at a stable, family-run operation that takes care of its people, send your resume and let’s connect.
