Job description

Position Summary

The Data Analyst is responsible for translating business and client reporting needs into accurate, maintainable data solutions. This role develops and supports SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports, Power BI reports and dashboards, data views, and the SQL queries and stored procedures that power them. The Data Analyst serves as a consultative partner to internal teams and clients, using structured discovery and analytical judgment to identify the underlying business need rather than simply reproducing the initial request. The position also promotes trusted data, reusable reporting assets, clear documentation, and scalable reporting practices across the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Meet directly with internal stakeholders and clients to understand reporting requests, clarify objectives, identify the decisions the report must support, and determine the root business need before proposing a solution.
  • Work with data housed in Microsoft Fabric (lakehouse, warehouse, or semantic models) to support scalable analytics
  • Design, create, enhance, and maintain Power BI semantic models, reports, dashboards, visualizations, measures, and data transformations using appropriate data modeling and DAX practices.
  • Design, create, enhance, test, deploy, and maintain SSRS reports, including report parameters, expressions, datasets, subscriptions, and export-ready layouts.
  • Write, review, troubleshoot, and optimize complex SQL queries, views, functions, and stored procedures used to populate reports, dashboards, application data views, and analytical datasets.
  • Collaborate with data engineering and systems teams to improve data quality, modeling, and performance
  • Evaluate whether a request should be addressed through an existing report, an enhancement, a new report, a dashboard, a data extract, or a change to the underlying data structure, and recommend the most sustainable option.
  • Translate business requirements into clear reporting specifications, data definitions, acceptance criteria, mockups, and validation steps before development begins.
  • Validate report results against source systems and business rules; investigate discrepancies, identify root causes, and coordinate correction of data, logic, or process issues.
  • Partner with Data Operations, Product, Client Experience, Sales, Finance, Marketing, IT, and other teams to create consistent definitions, governed metrics, and reusable reporting solutions.
  • Maintain and improve existing client-facing and internal reports while minimizing duplicate logic, one-off solutions, and unsupported reporting dependencies.
  • Analyze report performance and SQL execution plans; tune queries, stored procedures, datasets, and report designs to improve reliability and response time.
  • Create and maintain documentation for reports, datasets, stored procedures, data views, business rules, source-to-report mappings, and support procedures.
  • Manage assigned reporting requests through discovery, prioritization, development, testing, stakeholder review, deployment, and post-release support.
  • Communicate technical findings, constraints, tradeoffs, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences, including clients and leadership.
  • Support the organization’s transition toward modern analytics and data-platform capabilities by contributing to standardized data models, self-service reporting, and Microsoft data technologies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive company and client information and perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Data Analytics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Preferred: Three to five years of experience in data analysis, business intelligence, report development, or database reporting in a client-facing or business-facing environment.

Skills/Experience

  • Required: Strong SQL Server experience, including the ability to independently create, modify, troubleshoot, and optimize complex queries, views, functions, and stored procedures.
  • Required: Hands-on experience creating and maintaining SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports, including datasets, parameters, expressions, grouping, drill-through behavior, and subscriptions.
  • Required: Hands-on experience creating and maintaining Microsoft Power BI reports and dashboards, including data modeling, Power Query, DAX measures, relationships, filters, and publishing practices.
  • Required: Experience working with modern data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric (or similar technologies)
  • Required: Demonstrated ability to lead requirements-discovery conversations with clients and business stakeholders, ask effective follow-up questions, and identify the underlying problem, decision, or outcome behind a reporting request.
  • Required: Ability to translate business needs into clear technical requirements, report specifications, data definitions, acceptance criteria, and validation plans.
  • Required: Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, including the ability to challenge assumptions, reconcile conflicting requirements, and recommend practical alternatives.
  • Required: Experience validating report output against source data and business rules and diagnosing data-quality, logic, or integration issues.
  • Required: Ability to design reports and dashboards that communicate information clearly and support effective business decisions, rather than simply displaying available data.
  • Required: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts, data limitations, and solution tradeoffs to non-technical audiences and clients.
  • Required: Strong customer-service and stakeholder-management skills, including the ability to set expectations, manage scope, and professionally redirect requests toward a better solution.
  • Required: Ability to work independently, manage multiple reporting requests, document progress, and escalate risks or unresolved decisions appropriately.
  • Required: Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in report logic, calculations, filters, formatting, and data presentation.
  • Required: Experience with source control, structured testing, deployment practices, and change management for reports and database objects.
  • Required: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including PivotTables, Power Query, lookup functions, and data reconciliation techniques.
  • Required: Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive company, employee, financial, and client information.
  • Required: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and collaboration tools.
  • Preferred: Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure data services, data warehouses or lakehouses, ETL/ELT processes, and governed semantic models.
  • Preferred: Experience reporting from ERP, CRM, and enterprise application platforms, particularly Microsoft Dynamics 365, Business Central, or similar systems.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting multi-tenant SaaS applications, client-specific reporting configurations, APIs, or legacy enterprise systems such as IBM i/AS400.
