What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ESS Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ESS (Energy Storage System) Technician, you need a solid background in electrical systems, troubleshooting, and maintenance, typically supported by technical training or an associate degree in electronics or electrical engineering. Familiarity with battery management systems, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and safety certifications such as OSHA are highly beneficial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These competencies are essential for ensuring the safe, efficient installation and maintenance of energy storage systems, which are critical for grid reliability and renewable energy integration.

What is the difference between Ess Tech vs Network Technician?

AspectEss TechNetwork Technician

Work EnvironmentData centers, enterprise IT departments, field serviceNetwork operations centers, client sites, telecom environments
Industry UsageIT services, telecommunications, data managementNetworking, telecommunications, IT support
Job FocusSupporting and maintaining electrical and electronic systems in data centersInstalling, troubleshooting, and repairing network infrastructure

Ess Tech and Network Technician roles share certifications and work environments but differ in focus. Ess Tech primarily supports electrical and electronic systems in data centers, while Network Technicians focus on network infrastructure. Both roles are vital in IT and telecom industries, often overlapping in skills but serving distinct functions.

What are some common challenges an Ess Tech may face when supporting electrical systems, and how can they be addressed?

Ess Techs (Electrical Support Specialists/Technicians) often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex electrical faults, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. To address these, it’s important to maintain up-to-date technical knowledge, collaborate closely with engineers and other technicians, and follow structured diagnostic procedures. Regular training and clear communication within the team also help in overcoming these challenges and ensuring safe, efficient system maintenance.

What does an ESS Tech do?

An ESS Tech, or Energy Storage System Technician, is responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting energy storage systems such as batteries used in renewable energy projects. They ensure that these systems operate efficiently and safely by monitoring performance, conducting repairs, and performing routine inspections. ESS Techs may also assist in integrating storage solutions with other energy systems and provide technical support to clients or engineers. Their work is critical in supporting the reliability and sustainability of modern power grids.

Job description

Catalyzing a cleaner future.

ESS is a globally recognized leader in sustainable energy storage and is consistently identified as one of the most innovative and exciting technology players in energy storage. It is poised to be one of the fastest growing energy technology companies in the world, with projects already across 4 continents and an upcoming public offering. The ESS vision is about enabling the decarbonization of the grid by enabling us to achieve up to 100% of our electricity from clean, sustainable renewable energy. These are ambitious goals, and we are pursuing them with passion. At ESS, we are leading the energy transition, creating the sustainable energy solutions of the future to help individuals, businesses and communities change energy into lasting value.

ESS Inc. is seeking a Sr. Electrical Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to lead and support the design, development, and delivery of grid‑scale and distributed energy storage projects. This role owns electrical designs from early concepts through final product release and supports both internal product development and external customer projects. The successful candidate will collaborate across multidisciplinary engineering teams and serve as a technical leader, mentor, and subject matter expert in battery energy storage systems.

What you’ll do at ESS
Technical Ownership & Design

  • Own battery system electrical designs for ESS energy base products from early development through final product release.
  • Support grid‑scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects by developing conceptual layouts, one‑line diagrams, and detailed electrical designs through Issue for Construction (IFC) packages.
  • Support microgrid and distributed energy resource projects by developing detailed electrical engineering designs.
  • Evaluate, analyze, and compare energy storage technologies, products, and vendors. Support technology and vendor selection and implementation.
  • Develop and review engineering design plans, technical specifications, cost estimates, and construction documents at various design milestones.

Project & Client Support

  • Prepare written technical reports clearly communicating battery energy storage concepts, feasibility studies, and use‑case analyses to diverse audiences.
  • Participate in meetings with clients, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders in support of project execution and business development.
  • Provide construction‑phase technical support including bid addenda, submittal reviews, RFIs, construction progress reports (CPRs), and change orders.

Cross Functional Collaboration

  • Coordinate closely with civil, structural, fire & life safety (FLS), power systems, and SCADA teams/contractors to deliver IFC design packages.
  • Participate in design reviews with internal stakeholders, governing agencies, and AHJs.

Leadership & Expertise

  • Serve as a technical mentor or counselor to junior engineering staff.
  • Coordinate project workload to ensure on‑time delivery of engineering documents.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews of work performed by other engineers, designers, and technicians.
  • Provide technical assistance and subject‑matter expertise to ESS teams and customers as needed.
  • Support development and continuous improvement of internal engineering design guidelines, catalogs, and templates. Direct contributions to technical, R&D, and project development through document creation and review.
  • All other duties as assigned.

What you bring to the table
Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program or equivalent accredited agency with 8+years of proven experience. A mix of education and applicable experience will be considered.
  • Strong fundamentals in electrical and mechanical principles.
  • Background in power systems engineering with a focus on LV and MV installations.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience with at least one BESS installation from start to finish involving multiple technical stakeholders.
  • Proficient with one or more drafting software packages for one line diagram creation and site construction layout.
  • Must be able to work in cross-functional, fast-paced engineering environments with little oversight or direction.

Technical Expertise

  • Professional Engineering (PE)license preferred but not required.
  • Systems‑level thinker with the ability to optimize products across disciplines and technical domains.
  • Ability to interpret engineering deliverable content and how it will impact construction feasibility.
  • Knowledgeable in at least one of the following standards: UL9540, IEC62932, or NFPA 70 (NEC).
  • Proficiency in test planning, experimental design, and statistical data analysis for subscale and production level systems.
  • Understanding of battery chemistry fundamentals, flow batteries, and specific challenges associated with implementation.
  • Strong documentation, reporting, and technical communication skills.

Company Benefits

In addition to the value of working with and helping grow a global reaching clean technology, ESS offers Company assisted medical, dental and vision, 401k with Company match, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), a generous flexible time off plan, and 8 paid holidays.
