Job Title: ESL Teacher

Reports to:School administration, assistant superintendent, EL Coordinator

Receives Guidance From:Assistant Superintendent, district and school Administrators, District Directors

Overtime Status:  Compliant with position, salary, and FLSA regulations

Job Purpose:

Under general supervision, plans, organizes, and presents instruction and instructional environments which help English Language Learners learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their English Language Acquisition, academic skills, and social development. Monitors compliance of federal, state, and local policies governing the education of English Language Learners and the English as a Second Language Program (Title III, Elementary and Secondary Education Act -1965 I Every Student Succeeds Act -2015).

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Internalizing curriculum, standards, and assessments to deliver and eventually create rigorous lessons aligned to state standards.
• Providing feedback on teacher lesson plans and student materials to ensure they are appropriate for ESL students.
• Analyzing assessment data (formative, summative, interim) to refine lesson and unit plans, to provide support to struggling students, and to adjust flexible groupings.
• Supporting students in mastering state standards, including providing targeted interventions and remediation when necessary.
• Supporting teachers on differentiation and support for ESL students.
• Modeling techniques in the classroom.
• Coaching teachers in the classroom, co-teaching when needed, and supporting individual students in language acquisition.
• Setting and achieving school wide goals for ESL students and improvement in language development.
• Supporting ELPT testing.
• Supporting ESL meetings.
• Assume responsibility for own professional growth and development, for keeping current with literature, new research findings, for attending appropriate professional meetings and conferences, and to maintain any credits and/or continued education for maintenance of licensure/qualifications required for the position
• Maintain and accept responsibility for any district owned fixed asset item assigned to employee and ensure appropriate use by following district policies for acceptable use
• Undergo periodic evaluations according to state and board policy procedures
• Maintain confidentiality
• Regular, dependable, in person attendance is an essential function of this position
• Perform such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the Board of Education, superintendent, administrator, director or established by district policy
• Read, understand, and abide by Employee Conduct Policy, all other district, state and federal policies, and procedures and protocols as established by LCSD and the Mississippi Educator Code of Conduct

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or higher required
• A minimum of two years teaching experience
• Measurable evidence of driving student achievement gains
• Willingness to spend extra time with students that have not demonstrated mastery on standards
• Valid Mississippi Educator License Endorsement code 177
• Dual certification in ESL required
• A commitment to working with underserved, urban youth
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with a diverse staff
• Open to feedback, desire to continue development as a professional and willingness to take responsibility for student outcomes and achievement 

• Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)
