What is an ESE assistant?

ESE Assistants, or Exceptional Student Education Assistants, are educational professionals who support students with disabilities in school settings. They work under the supervision of teachers and special education staff to help students with academic, behavioral, and personal care needs. ESE Assistants may assist with classroom activities, provide one-on-one support, help with mobility and communication, and ensure that students have access to an inclusive learning environment. Their role is vital in helping students with exceptionalities succeed in their educational goals.

What does an ESE assistant do?

An ESE Assistant works closely with classroom teachers to support students with special needs by providing individualized assistance, adapting instructional materials, and helping manage classroom behavior. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ESE assistant?

To thrive as an ESE Assistant, you need knowledge of special education practices, familiarity with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and typically a high school diploma or equivalent, with some districts requiring additional training or certification.
