What is an Erlang developer?

An Erlang Developer is a software engineer who specializes in using the Erlang programming language to build scalable, concurrent, and fault-tolerant systems. Erlang is commonly used in telecommunications, messaging platforms, distributed systems, and real-time applications. Developers in this role design, write, test, and maintain applications that require high availability and responsiveness. They also optimize system performance, debug issues, and collaborate with teams to implement architectural improvements. Typically, an Erlang Developer must have expertise in functional programming, OTP (Open Telecom Platform), and distributed computing principles.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an Erlang developer?

As an Erlang Developer, your typical day involves designing, developing, and maintaining concurrent, fault-tolerant systems, often for applications requiring high availability such as telecommunications or messaging platforms. You’ll write and test Erlang code, monitor application performance, resolve system issues, and collaborate closely with other engineers, DevOps, and product managers to deliver scalable solutions. Regular participation in code reviews, architecture discussions, and Agile sprint meetings is also common. This role may also involve mentoring junior developers and keeping up with updates to both Erlang and functional programming best practices, ensuring robust and maintainable codebases.
