As of Jul 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for er tech in Michigan is $18.74, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.10 and $21.39 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How much do ER techs make a month?

Emergency Room (ER) technicians typically earn between $2,500 and $4,000 per month, depending on experience, location, and certifications. Entry-level ER techs may earn closer to the lower end, while experienced technicians or those in high-demand areas can earn more. The role often requires basic life support certification and familiarity with medical equipment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ER Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ER Tech, you need a solid understanding of emergency medical procedures, basic patient care, and usually a high school diploma with EMT certification. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems, vital signs monitors, and various emergency care equipment is essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this fast-paced environment. These skills are vital for ensuring efficient patient care, supporting the ER team, and maintaining safety in emergency situations.

Is an ER tech higher than a cna?

An ER tech is a healthcare professional who assists emergency room staff with patient care and medical tasks, often requiring specific training or certification. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) provide basic patient care under supervision, but ER techs typically have more specialized skills and responsibilities in the emergency setting, making them generally considered to have a higher or more advanced role. However, the exact hierarchy can vary by facility and state regulations.

What is the difference between Er Tech vs EMT?

AspectEr TechEMT
CertificationsCPR, Basic Life Support (BLS), Emergency Medical Technician certificationCPR, BLS, EMT certification
Work EnvironmentHospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care centersAmbulances, emergency scenes, hospitals
Job ResponsibilitiesAssist with patient care, prepare equipment, support medical staffProvide emergency medical care, transport patients, perform basic life support

Both Er Techs and EMTs work in emergency and healthcare settings, often requiring similar certifications like CPR and BLS. While Er Techs primarily assist in hospital environments supporting medical staff, EMTs focus on pre-hospital emergency care and patient transport. Understanding these differences helps clarify career paths and job expectations in emergency medical services.

What are some common challenges an ER Tech may encounter during a typical shift?

ER Techs often work in fast-paced, high-stress environments where they must quickly adapt to changing situations and prioritize patient care effectively. They may face challenges such as managing multiple urgent tasks at once, assisting with difficult patients, and coordinating with nurses, physicians, and other hospital staff during emergencies. Time management, strong communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are essential to thrive in this role. Regular exposure to traumatic situations can also be emotionally demanding, so resilience and a supportive team environment are important.

What does a tech do in the ER?

An ER technician, or ER tech, assists emergency room staff by preparing and maintaining medical equipment, collecting patient specimens, and helping with patient care tasks. They often operate medical devices, monitor patient conditions, and support the clinical team under supervision. Certification in basic life support and familiarity with hospital protocols are typically required.

What does it take to be an ER tech?

An ER tech, or emergency room technician, typically needs a high school diploma or equivalent and certification such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). They must have strong communication skills, the ability to work in fast-paced environments, and knowledge of medical procedures and equipment. On-the-job training is common, and certifications may be required or preferred by employers.

What are ER Techs?

ER Techs, or Emergency Room Technicians, are healthcare professionals who assist doctors and nurses in emergency departments. They perform a variety of tasks such as taking vital signs, performing EKGs, drawing blood, assisting with procedures, and helping to move or transport patients. ER Techs play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of the ER by supporting clinical staff and providing direct patient care. Their work helps the emergency team respond quickly and efficiently to urgent medical situations.
