How much do er lpn jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for er lpn in the United States is $29.88, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.76 and $33.65 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Why don't hospitals hire LPNs anymore?

Hospitals increasingly prefer registered nurses (RNs) over licensed practical nurses (LPNs) due to the expanded scope of practice and higher level of training required for RNs. LPNs often work in long-term care or outpatient settings, as hospitals focus on roles that require more advanced skills and education, such as patient assessment and complex care management.

How much do LPNs make in the ER?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) working in emergency rooms typically earn between $40,000 and $60,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and employer. ER LPNs often work shifts that include nights, weekends, and holidays, and may require specialized training in emergency care.

What are ER LPNs?

ER LPNs, or Emergency Room Licensed Practical Nurses, are healthcare professionals who assist in delivering patient care in emergency departments. They work under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors, performing tasks such as taking vital signs, administering medications, starting IVs, and assisting with procedures. ER LPNs play a crucial role in supporting the medical team and ensuring patients receive prompt and effective care during emergencies.

Can you work in the ER as an LPN?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) can work in emergency rooms, providing basic patient care under the supervision of RNs and physicians. They need relevant certifications, clinical experience, and often must adapt quickly to fast-paced environments. However, scope of practice varies by state and facility policies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ER LPN, and why are they important?

To thrive as an ER LPN, you need a practical nursing diploma, current LPN licensure, and strong clinical skills in emergency care and patient assessment. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), triage protocols, and emergency medical equipment is essential. Quick decision-making, effective communication, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure timely, accurate care for patients in high-stress emergency settings, supporting positive outcomes and team efficiency.

What are some common challenges ER LPNs face during a typical shift, and how can they effectively manage them?

ER LPNs often encounter fast-paced environments with rapidly changing priorities, which can be challenging to manage. They may care for multiple patients with varying levels of acuity and must be prepared to handle stressful, high-pressure situations. Effective time management, strong communication with the healthcare team, and adaptability are essential skills for success in this role. Building experience and confidence in emergency protocols can also help LPNs navigate these challenges more effectively while maintaining high-quality patient care.

What is the difference between Er Lpn vs Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)?

AspectEr LpnEmergency Medical Technician (EMT)
CredentialsLicensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license, possibly additional ER trainingState certification as EMT, CPR certification
Work EnvironmentHospitals, emergency rooms, clinicsAmbulances, emergency scenes, pre-hospital settings
Job ResponsibilitiesAssist nurses and doctors, monitor patient vitals, provide basic careProvide emergency care, stabilize patients, transport to hospitals

While both Er Lpn and EMT roles involve emergency care, Er Lpns work mainly within hospital settings assisting medical staff, whereas EMTs operate primarily in pre-hospital environments providing immediate emergency treatment and transport. The choice depends on whether you prefer hospital-based care or field emergency response.

What do LPNs do in the emergency room?

LPNs in the emergency room assist with patient care by taking vital signs, recording medical histories, preparing patients for exams, and supporting registered nurses and physicians. They may also help with basic procedures, monitor patient conditions, and ensure safety and comfort under supervision.
