Equestrian Designer information

What is an equestrian designer?

An Equestrian Designer is a professional who specializes in designing facilities, equipment, and apparel related to equestrian activities, such as horse stables, riding arenas, and specialized gear. They combine knowledge of horse care, rider needs, and architectural or product design to create functional and aesthetically pleasing solutions for the equestrian community. Their work ensures safety, comfort, and efficiency for both horses and riders, often collaborating with architects, engineers, and equine experts. Equestrian Designers may work on projects ranging from private stables to large equestrian centers, as well as designing equestrian fashion and tack.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an equestrian designer?

To thrive as an Equestrian Designer, you need a solid background in architecture or design, with specialized knowledge of equestrian facility requirements and safety standards. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and relevant building codes or equestrian facility certifications is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and problem-solving skills help in understanding client needs and ensuring functional, aesthetically pleasing designs. These competencies are crucial for creating safe, efficient, and attractive spaces that support both horses and riders.

What are some common challenges equestrian designers face when balancing functionality and aesthetics in their projects?

Equestrian Designers often encounter the challenge of integrating practical requirements, such as safety, durability, and comfort for both horses and riders, with the desire for visually appealing and innovative spaces. Achieving this balance requires a deep understanding of equestrian needs, industry regulations, and creative problem-solving. Designers typically collaborate closely with trainers, riders, and facility managers to ensure that their designs meet functional standards while also enhancing the user experience. Additionally, staying updated with new materials and technologies helps in creating spaces that are both beautiful and practical.

What is the difference between Equestrian Designer vs Equestrian Architect?

Industry UsageFocus on aesthetic, functional design of riding arenas, stablesFocus on structural, safety, and regulatory aspects of equestrian facilities

Equestrian Designers primarily focus on the aesthetic and functional aspects of equestrian facilities, often working on design concepts and layouts. Equestrian Architects, on the other hand, handle the structural and regulatory components, ensuring safety and compliance. Both roles require design-related credentials but differ in scope and responsibilities within the industry.

Are equestrian designer jobs in demand?

Equestrian designer jobs are relatively specialized and depend on the equestrian industry and market demand for riding facilities, show venues, and related infrastructure. While opportunities exist in regions with active equestrian communities, overall demand can fluctuate based on economic factors and industry growth. Skills in design, architecture, and knowledge of equestrian needs are essential for success in this field.

Job description

DC is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Architectural Designer III to lead the design and documentation of luxury custom residential projects. This role supports the creation of high-end homes with complex architecture, elevated detailing, and a premium client experience.

The ideal candidate has advanced Revit capabilities, strong design judgment, and the ability to independently manage projects through schematic design and documentation while coordinating with Sales, Operations, clients, consultants, and jurisdictions. This position requires a confident decision-maker who can blend creativity with precision and proactively solve challenges before they impact timelines, budgets, or design intent.

This role is open to candidates who reside in the United States and are authorized to work in the U.S.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and documentation of high-end custom residential projects, translating client goals into clear architectural direction with strong planning, character, and refined composition.
  • Develop and manage Revit models and plan sets from schematic design through permit-ready documentation, producing coordinated drawings (plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, and notes) that are clear, accurate, and highly constructible.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for client and consultant coordination, guiding design decisions, integrating technical inputs, and aligning scope, schedule, quality, and design intent across internal and external teams.
Perform code and zoning research and incorporate permitting requirements early, coordinating with planning departments and jurisdictions to support approvals and respond to comments efficiently.
  • Collaborate closely with Sales, Operations, and Construction to ensure project expectations remain aligned and documentation supports real-world execution and quality outcomes.
  • Improve workflows, templates, and drafting standards to reduce rework, increase clarity, and support a culture of continuous improvement and design excellence.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Advanced Revit proficiency for complex residential modeling and documentation
  • Strong design judgment with luxury-level attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and client presentation skills
  • Proactive problem-solver with strong organizational skills
  • Collaborative, team-first leader who can delegate and drive results
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Bluebeam

Education and Experience:

  • Strong working knowledge of construction methods, assemblies, and documentation best practices.
  • Experience with high-end residential detailing, premium material integration, and consultant coordination preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Architecture, Building Design, Construction Science, or a related field.
  • 8–10+ years of professional experience in architectural design and documentation.

Benefits:

  • Medical, Dental and Vision with low premiums for you and eligible dependents
  • SIMPLE IRA Plan – Company match up to 3%
  • Health FSA and Dependent Care FSA
  • Paid Holidays
  • Paid Time Off
