Job description

Department
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory - Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR)
Our Mission
The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab) advances discovery, innovation, and education by developing and operating the world's most powerful and versatile high magnetic field facilities. We empower researchers from across the globe to explore the frontiers of science, drive transformative technologies, and deepen our understanding of the natural world. Through collaboration, responsible stewardship, and a commitment to training the next generation of scientists, we serve as a national resource dedicated to expanding knowledge for the benefit of society. The Electron Magnetic Resonance program provides researchers around the world with state-of-the-art high-frequency continuous-wave and pulsed EPR spectrometers and assists with electron magnetic resonance measurements at frequencies and fields that are not available at their home institutions.
The Maglab is sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida, and users from around the world have access to experiments in high magnetic fields without cost.
Florida State University and the MagLab invites applications from qualified candidates to strengthen its Electron Magnetic Resonance (EMR) facility and to advance cutting-edge EMR research in high magnetic field environments.
Responsibilities
Provide user support and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of chemists, physicists, and engineers to integrate EPR findings into broader research projects.
Design and conduct advanced EPR experiments (continuous-wave and pulsed) to investigate the structure and dynamics of paramagnetic systems.
Maintain and enhance EPR instrumentation, in particular our 94 GHz high-power pulsed spectrometer (HiPER), ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
Contribute to publications and conference presentations showcasing research results obtained in the EMR facility.
Grow the EMR program by seeking funding sources and submitting external grant applications.
Qualifications
P hD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Postdoctoral experience.
  • Hands-on experience with pulsed EPR spectroscopy.
  • Proficiency in spectral analysis and simulation tools (e.g., EasySpin, MATLAB, Bruker Xepr).
  • Strong understanding of spin physics, relaxation processes, and hyperfine interactions. Experience with bio-chemical/bio-physical applications.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to communicate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • A track record of scientific publications and conference presentations in the field of magnetic resonance.

Helpful
The Impact You'll Make
As a member of our team in the EMR program, you will be at the forefront of state-of-the-art experiments that help reveal the fundamental properties of paramagnetic species. Your expertise will help us design, execute, and interpret high-precision EPR studies that inform breakthroughs in chemistry, physics, and materials science and engineering. The data you generate in collaboration with external users of the facility will directly influence the development of new functional materials, energy solutions, and quantum science.
Why You'll Love It Here
  • Access to state-of-the-art EPR facilities, including high-field and variable-temperature capabilities.
  • Opportunities to collaborate with leading research groups worldwide.
  • Opportunities for professional development including attending conferences, workshops, or specialized training.
  • A supportive, intellectually vibrant environment that values both scientific rigor and creative exploration.
  • Competitive salary, comprehensive benefits, and flexible work arrangements.
