How much do epigenomics jobs pay per year?

As of May 31, 2026, the average yearly pay for epigenomics in the United States is $59,022.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $49,000.00 and $66,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Epigenomics Scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Epigenomics Scientist, you need a strong background in molecular biology, genetics, and bioinformatics, typically supported by a PhD or advanced degree in a relevant field. Proficiency with high-throughput sequencing technologies, data analysis platforms like R or Python, and experience with techniques such as ChIP-seq or DNA methylation assays are crucial. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for interpreting complex data and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are essential for advancing research, accurately analyzing epigenetic modifications, and driving discoveries in health and disease.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in epigenomics research teams?

Professionals in epigenomics often encounter challenges such as managing and analyzing large-scale, complex datasets generated from sequencing technologies. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams—such as bioinformaticians, molecular biologists, and statisticians—is essential for interpreting results and troubleshooting experimental protocols. Keeping up with rapid technological advances and evolving best practices in both wet lab and computational methods can also be demanding. However, these challenges provide opportunities to develop cross-disciplinary skills and contribute to high-impact discoveries.

What is epigenomics?

Epigenomics is the study of the complete set of epigenetic modifications on the genetic material of a cell, known as the epigenome. These modifications, such as DNA methylation and histone modification, do not change the underlying DNA sequence but can influence gene expression and cellular function. Epigenomics research helps scientists understand how genes are regulated in different cell types, during development, and in response to environmental factors. This field is crucial for understanding complex diseases, including cancer, and can lead to new therapeutic strategies.

What is the difference between Epigenomics vs Genomics Technician?

AspectEpigenomicsGenomics Technician
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or related field; laboratory experienceBachelor's degree in biology, genetics, or related field; laboratory skills
Work EnvironmentResearch labs focusing on gene regulation and epigenetic modificationsGenetics labs performing DNA sequencing and analysis
Industry UsageAcademic, biotech, pharmaceutical sectorsResearch institutions, biotech companies

Epigenomics involves studying heritable changes in gene expression caused by mechanisms other than DNA sequence, such as DNA methylation. Genomics technicians focus on sequencing and analyzing DNA. While both roles require similar educational backgrounds and work in laboratory settings, epigenomics emphasizes gene regulation mechanisms, whereas genomics centers on DNA sequence analysis.

Job description

The Associate Scientist performs a variety of moderately complex research tasks determined by the field and scope of the particular research project/study. Also, performs tasks related to the research project independently, but within broad guidelines and subject to periodic review by supervisor or other research staff.
The lab of Jamy Peng in the Department of Developmental Neurobiology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is seeking an Associate Scientist to investigate how genomic DNA organization and gene regulation within stem cells influence their function and identity, explore chromatin structure, histone modifications, and their impact on gene expression in stem cells, and contribute to uncovering the molecular basis of pediatric cancer and normal development.
The ideal candidate will have the following:
  • Strong background in developmental biology, molecular biology, stem cell biology, or closely related fields.
  • Deep understanding of epigenetics, including: chromatin structure and organization; histone modifications; epigenetic regulation of gene expression; protein-RNA interactions in stem cells
  • Hands-on experience with techniques commonly used to interrogate epigenetic mechanisms (e.g., ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, RNA-seq, CRISPR-based perturbation, imaging assays, stem cell assays).
  • Strong competence in designing, executing, and troubleshooting independent experiments using existing or newly developed protocols.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Independently perform experiments using existing, modified, or newly developed techniques/ protocols.
  • Set up protocols using new or modified laboratory techniques and troubleshoot experiments independently.
  • Identify experimental data pertinent to the analysis problem; process, organize, and summarize data; report results.
  • Assist in the drafting and editing of manuscripts, posters, SOPs, and policies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the field and related techniques.
  • Provide ongoing support for monitoring, maintenance, ordering, and purchasing of equipment and supplies as needed.
  • Perform calibration of instruments and equipment as necessary.
  • Provide guidance and training to less-experienced team members and may also train others outside lab in relevant techniques.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific area

Minimum Experience:
  • 7 + years of research experience is required
  • 5 + years of research experience is required with a Master's degree
  • 2 + years of research experience is required with a PHD
  • Experience leading and supporting research experiments preferred
  • Some experience leading lab and scientific project coordination, maintenance, and other research support activities preferred
  • Experience in guiding and training other laboratory personnel preferred
  • Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role
