What is an Epic writer?

An Epic Writer is a professional who creates and manages 'epics' within project management and software development frameworks, particularly those that use Agile methodologies. Epics are large bodies of work that can be broken down into smaller tasks or user stories. The Epic Writer is responsible for defining the scope, objectives, and deliverables of these epics, ensuring they align with business goals, and communicating requirements clearly to development teams. This role often involves collaborating with stakeholders, product owners, and developers to ensure successful project outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by Epic writers when collaborating with clinicians and IT staff during EHR documentation projects?

Epic Writers often work closely with clinicians and IT professionals to create clear, accurate documentation for electronic health record (EHR) systems. A common challenge is translating complex clinical workflows and technical requirements into user-friendly guides while ensuring accuracy and compliance. Navigating differing priorities and communication styles among stakeholders can also be demanding. Effective Epic Writers proactively seek feedback, clarify requirements, and adapt their writing to support both end-users and technical teams, making strong communication skills essential in this collaborative environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Epic writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Epic Writer, you need strong storytelling abilities, a deep understanding of narrative structure, and proficiency in written communication, typically supported by experience in creative writing or literature. Familiarity with word processing tools, style guides, and sometimes creative writing software like Scrivener or Final Draft is common. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to accept and incorporate feedback are vital soft skills that help distinguish top performers in this field. These skills ensure engaging, coherent, and impactful stories that resonate with audiences and meet publishing or production standards.

What is the difference between Epic Writer vs Technical Writer?

AspectEpic Writer
Primary FocusCreating detailed user stories, acceptance criteria, and documentation for healthcare or software projects using Epic systems
Required SkillsKnowledge of Epic software, healthcare workflows, technical writing, and clinical terminology
Work EnvironmentHealthcare IT departments, hospitals, or software development teams specializing in Epic systems
CertificationsEpic certifications, technical writing certifications often preferred

Epic Writers focus on developing detailed documentation and user stories specifically for Epic healthcare software, whereas Technical Writers create a broader range of technical documents across various industries. While both roles require strong writing skills and technical understanding, Epic Writers need specialized knowledge of Epic systems and healthcare workflows. The roles often overlap in healthcare IT projects, but Epic Writers are more specialized in Epic software documentation.
