What is an Epic Go Live Trainer?

An Epic Go Live Trainer is a healthcare IT professional responsible for training hospital staff and clinicians on how to use the Epic electronic health record (EHR) system during its implementation or upgrade. These trainers ensure that end-users can efficiently navigate the system, enter and retrieve patient data, and follow best practices. They often lead classroom sessions, provide hands-on support during the go-live period, and offer ongoing assistance to address user questions and issues. Their work is crucial for a smooth transition to the new EHR system and maintaining patient care quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Epic Go Live Trainer?

To excel as an Epic Go Live Trainer, you need a strong understanding of Epic EHR systems, healthcare workflows, and adult learning principles, typically supported by Epic certification and relevant clinical or IT experience. Familiarity with Epic training environments, learning management systems (LMS), and virtual training tools is essential. Excellent communication, patience, and adaptability are standout soft skills for engaging diverse learners and managing real-time challenges. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring seamless user adoption, minimizing errors, and achieving successful EHR implementation in healthcare organizations.

What are some common challenges Epic Go Live Trainers face during system rollouts, and how can they be addressed?

Epic Go Live Trainers often encounter challenges such as varying levels of end-user familiarity with technology, resistance to change, and time constraints for training sessions. To address these, trainers should be adaptable in their teaching methods, provide hands-on support, and foster a supportive learning environment. Collaborating closely with clinical and IT teams is also key to ensuring issues are quickly resolved and users feel confident transitioning to the new system.
