What is an EPC project engineer?

EPC Project Engineers are professionals responsible for overseeing engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects, typically in sectors like oil and gas, energy, or infrastructure. They coordinate project phases from initial design through procurement of materials and final construction, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to specifications. EPC Project Engineers collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, manage schedules, address technical challenges, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Their role is critical to the successful delivery of large-scale industrial projects.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an EPC project engineer?

To thrive as an EPC Project Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering (often a bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering), project management, and construction processes. Familiarity with project management software (like Primavera P6 or MS Project), AutoCAD, and knowledge of industry standards or certifications such as PMP are highly valuable. Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills help manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with technical and safety standards.

What are common challenges faced by an EPC project engineer during project execution?

EPC Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating between multiple contractors and vendors, managing schedule delays, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Balancing client expectations with on-site realities requires strong communication and problem-solving skills. Additionally, adapting to unexpected changes in project scope or resources is a frequent aspect of the job, making flexibility and proactive planning essential for success.

Job description

Intermediate Project Engineer - Oil & Gas (Upstream / Midstream) CANUSA EPC

Weโ€™re not your average EPC firm and this isnโ€™t your average engineering role.

At CANUSA EPC, youโ€™ll step into a hands-on Project Engineer role where your work actually moves projects forward in the field, in design reviews, and with clients. You wonโ€™t just support projects youโ€™ll help lead them.

What your day actually looks like:

Youโ€™ll be involved from early feasibility through detailed design, vendor coordination, and field execution. One day youโ€™re reviewing P&IDs or piping specs, the next youโ€™re on a site walk-down or talking directly with a client to solve real-world problems.

This role is ideal for someone whoโ€™s ready to take ownership, work independently, and still have strong senior engineering support behind them.

Youโ€™ll also act as a client-facing representative of CANUSA EPC so communication, confidence, and professionalism matter just as much as technical skill.

What youโ€™ll do:
  • Lead portions of project design and engineering deliverables
  • Develop and review P&IDs, piping specs, and mechanical systems
  • Perform equipment sizing (pumps, compressors, rotating equipment)
  • Review vendor documentation and track compliance with specs
  • Support piping design reviews and constructability input
  • Conduct field site visits and walk-downs across North America
  • Interface directly with clients and operations teams
  • Support junior engineers and contribute to team development
  • Participate in project execution from design through startup
What you bring:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
  • 3+ years engineering experience (oil & gas preferred)
  • 2+ years in upstream or midstream environments
  • Strong understanding of ASME B31 piping codes
  • Experience with P&IDs, piping design, and equipment sizing
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD / CADWorx / Navisworks
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • EIT working toward P.Eng / PE preferred
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across North America
What makes this role different:
  • Real field exposure not just desk work
  • Direct client interaction and ownership of deliverables
  • Opportunity to grow into senior engineering leadership
  • Exposure to full project lifecycle (design - construction - startup)
  • Strong team culture with technical mentorship built in
Why CANUSA EPC:

We combine engineering excellence with a practical, field-driven mindset. Our teams work closely, move quickly, and take pride in delivering work that actually gets built and operates safely.

We offer:
  • Modern office environment
  • Growth opportunities
  • Safe, field-aware culture
  • Regular team social events
  • Food provided in-office
  • Travel opportunities across North America
Culture:

We believe great engineering comes from collaboration, accountability, and respect. Weโ€™re building a workplace where people are supported, challenged, and given room to grow.

CANUSA EPC is committed to diversity, inclusion, and creating a workplace where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
