Job description

Position Summary

The Laboratory Technician atWillbanks Metals Inc. is responsible for performing material testing andquality verification on steel specimens to ensure compliance with industrystandards and customer specifications. This role supports the integrity of oursteel fabrication and distribution operations by maintaining precise laboratoryprocedures, accurate data recording, and safe handling of all specimens andmaterials.

Key ResponsibilitiesSpecimen Preparation

       Lift and push coupons up to 20 lbs to prepare samplesfor cutting and testing.

       Operate band saw equipment to cut down specimens fromcoupons to required dimensions.

       Use magnetic grinder to machine specimens to specificsize tolerances.

       Use stencil to clearly mark and identify each specimenprior to testing.

       Pair all specimens with their corresponding coil toensure traceability.

Testing & Quality Control

       Understand and apply all requirements for steel gradesA36, SA36, A572-50, A572-65, and A871-65.

       Submerge Charpy specimens in methanol bath for aminimum of 20 minutes prior to the start of impact testing.

       Understand and adhere to all temperature requirementsfor laboratory testing procedures.

       Ensure all laboratory test results and data arerecorded correctly and completely.

       Perform quality checks to verify specimens meetdimensional and material specifications before and after testing.

Lab Safety & Housekeeping

       Dispose of all tested specimens in accordance withcompany procedures upon completion of testing.

       Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory workenvironment at all times.

       Follow all OSHA and company safety guidelines whenhandling equipment, specimens, and chemicals.

       Immediately report any equipment malfunctions, safetyhazards, or non-conforming material to supervisor.

QualificationsEducation & Experience

       High school diploma or GED required; associate degreeor technical certification in materials science, metallurgy, or a related fieldpreferred.

       Prior experience in a manufacturing, metals, orlaboratory environment preferred.

       Familiarity with steel grades and ASTM materialstandards is a plus.

Skills & Abilities

       Ability to operate band saw, magnetic grinder, andother laboratory equipment safely.

       Strong attention to detail with a commitment to dataaccuracy and record integrity.

       Ability to read and interpret technical specificationsand work instructions.

       Physical ability to lift and move coupons weighing upto 20 lbs.

       Basic math and measurement skills; ability to work withprecise tolerances.

       Dependable, self-motivated, and able to workindependently with minimal supervision.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

       Work is performed in a laboratory and light industrialsetting with exposure to metals, chemicals (including methanol), and mechanicalequipment.

       Must be able to stand for extended periods and performrepetitive tasks.

       Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) isrequired and provided.

        May be exposed to varying temperatures due to testing requirements.
