Click here for more information\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nPOSITION HIGHLIGHTS\r\n\r\n\r\n This position is full-time, following a first shift schedule, 40 hours per week, and scheduled Monday - Friday.\r\n The EP Radiation Control Specialist will conduct inspections of facilities for compliance with the requirements of the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992 and its amendments.\r\n You will conduct inspections for and provide necessary technical knowledge and experience to the Department of Public Health to ensure hospitals and outpatient facilities are conducting x-ray and other radiology procedures in a manner that will protect the health and safety of workers, the general public and patients in accordance with the requirements of federal and Connecticut regulations.\r\n You will also perform radiation measurements as part of a field monitoring team supporting the Radiological Emergency Plan (REP) for nuclear facilities in the state.\r\n As an EP Radiation Control Specialist, you will also draft informal enforcement actions to those facilities that utilize ionizing radiation (i.e. mammography and x-ray facilities).\r\n\r\nPLEASE NOTE:The ideal candidate will be MQSA certified. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of specialized inspections of installations where devices emitting ionizing and non-ionizing radiation are used, handled or stored.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

\r\n\r\n Performs specialized inspections of installations where sources of ionizing radiation, especially diagnostic X-ray machines, are used or operated;\r\n Provides consultation in regard to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation control and related subjects;\r\n Inspects microwave ovens for radiation output;\r\n Assists Environmental Protection Radiation Control Physicists in all related work;\r\n Maintains and calibrates radiation detecting field instruments;\r\n May assist Environmental Protection Radiation Control Physicists in responding to incidents and accidents involving sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;\r\n Performs related duties as required.\r\n\r\n\r\n

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

\r\n Knowledge of\r\n \r\n principles of ionizing radiation and its measurement;\r\n radiation detection instruments;\r\n ionizing radiation control methods;\r\n practices pertaining to reduction of excessive or unnecessary exposures to radiation;\r\n Connecticut laws and regulations pertaining to control of sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;\r\n radiation protection standards and guides;\r\n \r\n \r\n Skills\r\n \r\n interpersonal skills;\r\n oral and written communication skills;\r\n \r\n \r\n Ability to utilize computer software.\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience as an X-ray technician.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Incumbents must possess and retain certification and registration by the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) as a Registered Technologist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

\r\n College training with a major in the physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.\r\n Graduation from an educational program accredited by a mechanism acceptable to ARRT for radiology may be substituted for the General Experience up to a maximum of two years.\r\n\r\n

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

\r\n\r\n Experience in application and interpretation of regulations and standards pertaining to radiation producing machinery such as the use of x-ray, mammography, commuted tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, accelerator or radiation therapy in medical, veterinary, or dental facilities;\r\n Experience in the safe use of x-ray, mammography, commuted tomography (CT), fluoroscopy, accelerator or radiation therapy in medical, dental, or veterinary facilities;\r\n Experience with principles and practices in the field of radiation protection;\r\n Experience working independently as well as part of a team; and\r\n Experience communicating risks of radiation to patients, parents, workers, or members of the public.\r\n\r\n\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.\r\n Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.\r\n Incumbents in this class are required to meet medical requirements and maintain qualification for respiratory protection.\r\n\r\n

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbent may have significant exposure to ionizing radiation, toxic chemicals and fumes.
