What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environmental Microbiology Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environmental Microbiology Intern, you need a basic understanding of microbiology, laboratory techniques, and environmental science, often supported by coursework or a degree in a related field. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, microbial culturing, PCR, and data analysis software like Excel or R is typically required. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate experimental results, effective teamwork, and meaningful contributions to environmental research projects.

What types of projects and daily tasks can I expect during an Environmental Microbiology Internship?

As an Environmental Microbiology Intern, you will typically assist with sample collection from various environments, such as soil, water, or air, and help process these samples in the laboratory. Your daily tasks may include preparing culture media, conducting microbial assays, and recording experimental data. Interns often work closely with research scientists and lab technicians, gaining hands-on experience with laboratory equipment and techniques. You may also participate in team meetings to discuss findings and contribute to ongoing research projects, providing an excellent opportunity to develop both technical and collaborative skills.

What is an Environmental Microbiology Internship?

An Environmental Microbiology Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience working with microorganisms in environmental contexts, such as soil, water, or air. Interns typically assist with laboratory experiments, field sampling, data analysis, and report writing to support research or monitoring projects. This opportunity allows interns to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings and develop practical laboratory and research skills. Such internships are valuable for building a career in environmental science, microbiology, or related fields.

Work may support research related to microfiltration, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet light/advanced oxidation processes, and chemical and microbial water quality monitoring.
The intern's work will focus primarily on molecular biology laboratory tasks, including field sampling, sample preparation, reagent and media preparation, molecular and microbiological analyses, and support for laboratory experiments involving environmental water samples. Analyses may include quantitative PCR (qPCR), droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), and other molecular biology techniques, as well as related microbiological and chemical laboratory methods.
Duties may also include sample collection, preparation of chemical reagents, operation of laboratory equipment, cleaning and maintenance of glassware and bench workspace, and accurate documentation of laboratory procedures and results.
This position requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week.
Typical Qualifications
Candidates must be current full-time undergraduate or Master's-level students, with Master's-level students preferred.
