Job description

Position Description:

The In-House General Contractor will oversee and execute various construction and remodeling projects across campus that fall below the threshold for outsourcing. The In-House General Contractor candidate will be responsible for construction projects that involve mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and concrete work, ensuring they are completed efficiently, safely, and within budget.

Major Responsibilities:

Mechanical and Plumbing Work:

  • Install new equipment, integrate with existing systems, and start up new mechanical equipment
  • Install and ensure proper functioning of plumbing and other mechanical systems

Electrical Work:

  • Perform electrical installations (outlets, wiring, lighting, etc.)
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes and safety standards

Carpentry Work:

  • Construct, install, and repair structures, fixtures, ceilings, and walls
  • Assemble and install cabinets, drywall, paint, and other carpentry work as necessary

Concrete Work:

  • Prepare and pour concrete for various projects, ensuring proper form and finish

Project Management:

  • Work closely with an assigned project coordinator for each individual project to plan, coordinate, and complete construction and remodeling projects from start to finish
  • Work closely with an assigned project coordinator to review a detailed project schedule and work plans
  • Work with the assigned project coordinator to review the quality of work and compliance with specifications and/or codes.
  • Source materials and ensure projects are completed on time and within budget
  • If projects are supplemented by subcontractors, this position may need to oversee that contractor's scope and standard of work.
  • Provide regular updates on project progress to the direct supervisor and the project coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational training or certification in construction, mechanical, electrical, carpentry, or related fields is preferred.
  • 5 or more years of experience in construction methods and regulations with proven expertise in mechanical, electrical, carpentry, and concrete work.
  • Valid general contractor license or trades certifications (e.g., HVAC, electrical) are a plus.
  • Able to read and understand mechanical, electrical, and architectural drawings.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Building Automation Systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and pass all University driving requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, speaking, and computing skills.

Other Qualifications:

  • Ability to creatively overcome obstacles.
  • Ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds and a diverse academic community.
  • Ability to work independently, but is an excellent collaborator and team player
  • Ability to perform physical labor, lift and pull a minimum of 50 lbs., standing for long periods, climbing ladders, use of scaffolding, and working in various environmental conditions (indoors and outdoors).
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products and project management software, scheduling.
  • Experience in a college/university environment.

Additional Information:

  • Schedule - Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 4 pm
  • Up to 25% travel
