What is an environmental associate attorney?

Environmental Associate Attorneys are early-career lawyers who specialize in environmental law, working primarily at law firms, government agencies, or nonprofit organizations. They assist senior attorneys in handling cases related to environmental regulations, compliance, litigation, and policy. Their work may involve researching statutes, drafting legal documents, representing clients in court, and advising on environmental impact issues. These attorneys play a key role in ensuring clients adhere to laws like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and other environmental regulations. The position typically requires a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and a strong interest in environmental protection and sustainability.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be an environmental associate attorney?

To thrive as an Environmental Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and a solid understanding of environmental laws and regulations such as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Familiarity with legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, LexisNexis), environmental compliance systems, and case management software is typical. Strong analytical thinking, written and verbal communication, and negotiation skills help attorneys effectively advocate for clients and interpret complex regulations. These competencies are crucial for navigating legal complexities, ensuring regulatory compliance, and successfully representing clients in environmental matters.

What challenges do environmental associate attorneys face when handling regulatory compliance matters?

Environmental Associate Attorneys often encounter challenges in keeping up with frequently changing environmental regulations at the federal, state, and local levels. Interpreting complex statutes and advising clients on compliance requires strong analytical skills and attention to detail. Additionally, balancing the interests of clients with regulatory requirements and working collaboratively with government agencies can be demanding but offers valuable experience for professional growth.

Pay: $130,000.00 - $160,000.00 per year

WHY THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

  • Step into a high-caliber civil defense practice and immediately handle meaningful, complex matters across personal injury, auto liability, and insurance coverage — no hand-holding required
  • Work alongside some of Ohio's most respected civil defense attorneys in a collegial, team-oriented environment where your contributions are genuinely valued
  • Enjoy a balanced, sustainable workload with free parking and walkable amenities — whether you are based out of our westside Cleveland or Dublin (Columbus) office
  • Join a fast-growing firm with a strong and expanding client base, creating real upward opportunity for attorneys who perform
  • Benefit from a competitive salary commensurate with experience plus a strong bonus structure and an excellent benefits package
  • Take ownership of your cases — from discovery through trial — with the autonomy to grow as a litigator and courtroom advocate

LOCATION: This is a full-time, in-person role available in two locations: our westside Cleveland, Ohio office — a suburban setting with walkable parks, restaurants, and shops — or our Dublin, Ohio office near Bridge Park in the Columbus metro, offering an upscale, walkable environment with easy highway access. Both offices offer free parking and a lifestyle-friendly commute.

NOTE: Candidates must hold an active Ohio law license and have a minimum of 3+ years of civil litigation experience directly involving insurance-related and/or tort defense matters. The more experience you bring, the better — senior candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates without insurance defense or related litigation background will not be considered.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Manage an active caseload of civil defense matters with a focus on personal injury, auto accidents, and insurance coverage disputes across Ohio
  • Handle all phases of pre-trial litigation including written discovery, document review, and case strategy development
  • Take and defend fact and expert depositions with skill and precision
  • Draft and argue dispositive and non-dispositive motions at a high level
  • Conduct substantive case evaluations and deliver clear, accurate reporting to carrier and business clients
  • Serve as trial counsel in appropriate matters, owning the courtroom from opening to verdict
  • Collaborate with partners and team members on complex, multi-party cases while also driving your own files forward independently

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active Ohio law license in good standing (required)
  • 3+ years of civil litigation experience in insurance defense, tort defense, or closely related practice area — senior candidates strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience handling personal injury, auto liability, and/or insurance coverage matters
  • Strong legal writing, analytical, and oral advocacy skills
  • Ability to manage a demanding caseload independently and as part of a team
  • In-house or solo practice candidates considered if they bring demonstrated, recent experience working with carriers on insurance-related litigation
  • J.D. from an accredited law school
