What is an environmental architect?

An Environmental Architect is a professional who designs buildings and spaces with a focus on minimizing environmental impact and promoting sustainability. They integrate eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and green building practices into their designs. Environmental Architects work to ensure that structures are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible. Their goal is to create healthier living and working environments while conserving resources and reducing carbon footprints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an environmental architect?

To thrive as an Environmental Architect, you need a strong background in sustainable design, building science, and architecture, typically supported by a professional degree and relevant licensure. Proficiency with design software like AutoCAD, Revit, and energy modeling tools, as well as certifications such as LEED accreditation, is essential. Creativity, project management, and collaborative communication are vital soft skills for integrating environmental solutions and leading multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure the creation of innovative, eco-friendly structures that meet regulatory standards and address environmental challenges.

What are some common challenges environmental architects face when integrating sustainable solutions into building projects?

Environmental Architects often encounter challenges such as balancing client expectations with environmental goals, navigating regulatory requirements, and sourcing sustainable materials within budget constraints. Collaborating with engineers and contractors to ensure green solutions are feasible and cost-effective can also be complex. However, these challenges are typically addressed through early stakeholder engagement, thorough research, and creative problem-solving, which are integral to successful and impactful project outcomes.

What is the difference between Environmental Architect vs Sustainable Designer?

Sustainable Designers concentrate on developing sustainable products and spaces, with overlapping certifications like LEED. Both roles aim to promote sustainability but differ in scope and work settings.

What can you do with an environmental architect degree?

An environmental architect degree prepares individuals to design sustainable buildings and urban spaces that minimize environmental impact. Graduates can work in roles such as sustainable design consultants, green building project managers, or environmental planners, often utilizing tools like CAD software and pursuing certifications like LEED. The profession involves collaboration with engineers, urban planners, and clients to create eco-friendly solutions.

Job description

Architect

Kirkland, WA (onsite)

Our client, a well-established real estate development firm, is hiring an Architect to support the design and delivery of multifamily residential communities. This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys being involved beyond drawings alone and wants visibility into how projects move from initial design through construction.

The ideal candidate is a thoughtful, technically strong architect with multifamily experience who enjoys leading complex projects, collaborating with cross-functional teams, mentoring emerging staff, and seeing design decisions carry through into the built environment.

Architect Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support multifamily residential projects from early design through construction administration.
  • Develop and review architectural drawings, design packages, technical details, and construction documents.
  • Use Revit/BIM to produce accurate project documentation and support design coordination.
  • Interpret and apply building codes, zoning requirements, accessibility standards, and jurisdictional requirements.
  • Coordinate with consultants, contractors, internal stakeholders, and project teams to resolve design and documentation issues.
  • Review site plans, consultant drawings, construction documents, and field conditions for alignment with project goals and design intent.
  • Support project schedules, drawing quality, documentation standards, and timely delivery of architectural milestones.
  • Participate in design reviews, project meetings, jurisdictional coordination, and construction-phase problem solving.
  • Help maintain internal design standards and support process improvements across the architecture team.
  • Mentor junior team members and contribute to a collaborative, solutions-focused team environment.

Architect Qualifications:

  • Licensed Architect with over 8 years of experience in architectural design.
  • Multiple years designing and delivering multifamily residential projects.
  • Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Architecture or a related field.
  • Advanced Revit/BIM experience required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Enscape, Microsoft Office, or similar design and documentation tools preferred.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, zoning, accessibility requirements, construction documentation, and multifamily design practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, coordinate with cross-functional teams, and move projects forward with limited oversight.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
  • Interest in sustainable, efficient, and thoughtfully designed residential communities.

Company Benefits:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance
  • 401K with matching
  • Generous PTO, sick time, and holiday pay

Compensation: $105,000 - $130,000
