Environment Planner information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environment Planner, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environment Planner, you need expertise in environmental science, urban planning, and regulatory compliance, often supported by a degree in environmental planning or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, environmental impact assessment tools, and relevant planning regulations is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, effective communication, and collaborative skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure that projects are both environmentally responsible and compliant with legal standards, balancing development needs with sustainability.

What are some common challenges Environment Planners face when balancing development goals with environmental protection?

Environment Planners often navigate the complex task of aligning development projects with environmental regulations and community interests. A key challenge is finding solutions that satisfy both economic growth and sustainability, which can involve negotiating with multiple stakeholders and balancing competing priorities. This role typically requires strong communication and problem-solving skills to mediate between developers, government agencies, and the public. Staying current with evolving environmental laws and conducting thorough impact assessments are also crucial aspects of the job.

What are Environment Planners?

Environment Planners are professionals who develop and implement plans to manage natural resources, balance environmental protection with development, and ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations. They work with government agencies, private companies, and communities to assess the environmental impact of projects, create sustainable land-use plans, and promote eco-friendly practices. Their responsibilities often include conducting environmental assessments, preparing reports, and recommending ways to minimize negative effects on the environment. This role requires knowledge of environmental science, policy, and planning principles.

Responsibilities:
  • Plan and prepare maintenance work by reviewing, prioritizing, and defining the scope, labor, materials, safety requirements, and job steps for all incoming work orders in the CMMS.
  • Develop and maintain job plans and templates to standardize work execution, improve job quality, and ensure compliance with safety and maintenance standards.
  • Manage maintenance backlog health by organizing, classifying, and preparing work for scheduling, ensuring work orders are complete, accurate, and "ready-to-schedule."
  • Support the weekly and long-range maintenance schedule by aligning job requirements with labor availability, parts readiness, and operational downtime windows.
  • Identify needed spare parts, check stock availability, and generate purchase requisitions when required.
  • Ensure CMMS data accuracy and maintenance program integrity through high-quality job documentation, PM updates, equipment history records, and continuous PM optimization.
  • Prepare and distribute periodic maintenance backlog and KPI summaries to key stakeholders, highlighting overdue work orders, high-priority issues, and scheduling constraints.
  • Collaborate with Maintenance, Engineering, and the Storeroom to validate spare parts lists, BOM updates, and materials availability.
  • Assist with training of technicians, supervisors, and engineers in CMMS use, documentation standards, and planning workflows
  • Identify continuous improvement opportunities for PM tasks, job plans, and planning processes.

  • Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on maintenance experience in an industrial, manufacturing, utilities, or comparable environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • General working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and industrial equipment systems sufficient to understand failure modes, plan work, and estimate labor and materials.
  • Knowledge of preventive, predictive, and reliability-centered maintenance principles.
  • Understanding of predictive maintenance data (vibration, thermography, oil analysis) and how PdM findings inform job planning.
  • Strong computer literacy, including CMMS navigation, MS Excel (data analysis/visualization, filters, lookups), MS Word, MS Project, and SAP or equivalent purchasing systems.
  • High attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy across job plans, work orders, and CMMS asset data
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create clear, technician-friendly job plans.
  • Organizational and planning skills to manage multiple competing priorities, shifting schedules, and high-volume maintenance demands
  • Certification(s) in maintenance planning/scheduling, reliability (CMRP, CRL), or PMO/RCM methodologies are preferred but not required.
