Job description

The Safety, Health and Environment Manager is responsible for the environmental, health and safety performance in their facility and/or assigned additional plants and creating an injury free and environmentally sustainable work place. This incumbent serves as a subject matter expert, partnering with the Corporate S&E representative to plan and execute at the plant level, the successful implementation of risk-based prevention programs in the following areas: health, safety, and environmental in order to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries. This individual ensures all related plant level initiatives align with and support the corporate Safety & Environmental strategy, goals, objectives, guidelines and standards, partners with the plant production team and HR Manager to ensure both team and individual behaviors are aligned with the values and expectations of the Company's behavior based safety culture and is responsible for ensuring environmental regulatory compliance at assigned locations.
Your responsibilities:
  • The S&E guides and promotes employee safety performance by developing safety systems, policies and procedures, safety campaigns, and programs to eliminate prevent or control injurious hazards, acts or behaviors and creating a safety culture at all assigned facilities.
  • Acts as the advisor to the facility (-ies), providing support and technical assistance in the administration of and compliance with regulatory and company S&E requirements. Responsible for implementing and sustaining S&E programs and procedures by ensuring resources, tools and knowledge are available.
  • Partners with the Corporate S&E Representative to develop, integrate and execute Corporate and Business Unit S&E strategies, policies, programs, procedures, standards, training, processes and actions to drive standardization and consistency while ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Develop, align and implement short and long term action plans, projects, initiatives, goals and objectives that maintain balance between corporate objectives, business needs, and operations, including annual operating plans, capital planning, resource staffing and budgeting. Provide tactical direction and standardization to sites regarding S&E programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure the adequate assessment, prevention and management of S&E issues and risks arising from operations, incidents, company products and business affairs. Inspects/assesses, monitors, investigates and/or recommends corrective action; conducts trends analysis; documents compliance with standards; performs technical work, program design and implementation; accountability for outcomes of S&E issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Functions in a leadership role providing support for: agency interactions, enforcement actions; permitting applications, reports, issues and negotiations; S&E technical, engineering, and science support; assessment and control of S&E issues arising from operational processes, equipment, or materials.
  • Conduct shop floor inspections and audits to ensure compliance with local and regional regulatory, permit and company requirements. Collaborate with operations to ensure that corrective and/or preventive measures are completed.
  • Support and implement initiatives and continuous performance improvement opportunities that align Company S&E, Sustainability, ELS and business initiatives and strategies; promote rapid shared learning of best practices and "lessons learned".
  • Coach and mentor the professional development of facility S&E professionals or support leads; support the business unit in hiring site level S&E personnel.
  • Supports the Division S&E compliance program owner to interpret S&E regulations and successfully implement the development of company-wide standards, procedures or programs.
  • Provide employees, facility management, and division management with technical guidance, regulatory advice, and training.
  • Ensure that accidents, incidents, compliance deviations and enforcement actions are fully investigated to ensure that corrective and/or preventive measures are taken.
  • Lead/participate as a corporate S&E audit team leader/member for annual S&E compliance audits.
  • Responsible for the verification of SQF controls and meeting the standards of the SWF requirements
  • Actively participate as a member of the HACCP committee - ensuring appropriate action is taken to
  • ensure the integrity of the SQF system and to communicate to relevant personnel all information essential
  • to ensure effective implementation and maintenance of the SQF system

Languages:

Education/Experience:
  • Undergraduate degree in environmental engineering, occupational safety, or related discipline, with a minimum often (10) years environmental or safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Advanced certification in environmental, health, safety or related field is a plus (CSHO, OSHT, CET, CHMM, ASP, CSP).
  • Completion of OSHA 511 and 501 courses.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements for federal and state programs, process and program implementation strategies (CAA, NESHP, SPCC, SARA, RCRA and DOT).
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate performance metrics and outcomes and to constructively resolve challenges.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs; ability to lead, motivate and influence others towards change.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to develop, and conduct training on complex topics in a concise manner, appropriate to the audience.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for interacting with people at various levels of the organization and in a variety of functions.
