What Does an Environment Artist Do?

An environment artist is a digital animator that creates background art, typically in the video game industry. As an environment artist, your duties center on creating the environment in which the video game characters exist. This can range from creating in-game props to designing the textures for the entire landscape of the game. However, the job usually focuses on the objects in the background as opposed to the background itself. While it’s possible to work on independent video games, larger game developers are much more likely to have the resources to hire designated environment artists. You may also find work on animated film and video projects. Qualifications for this career include extensive 3D modeling experience and excellent design and rendering software skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Environment Artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Environment Artist, you need strong artistic abilities in 3D modeling, texturing, and a solid understanding of color, composition, and lighting, often supported by a degree in art, design, or a related field. Mastery of industry-standard tools such as Autodesk Maya, Blender, ZBrush, and Unreal Engine or Unity, as well as familiarity with PBR workflows, is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong collaboration and communication skills help you stand out in this role. These skills ensure the creation of immersive, visually compelling environments that enhance the overall quality and storytelling of games or films.

How does an Environment Artist typically collaborate with other departments during a game development project?

Environment Artists work closely with level designers, concept artists, and technical artists to ensure that the visual aspects of the game's world align with gameplay requirements and artistic vision. This collaboration often involves regular meetings to discuss level layouts, asset requirements, and optimization needs. Environment Artists may also coordinate with lighting artists and programmers to ensure environments are both visually appealing and technically efficient. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as changes in design or gameplay can impact how environments are built or adjusted throughout development.

What are environment artists?

Environment artists are professionals in the video game, film, or animation industries who are responsible for creating the visual environments where the action takes place. They design and build landscapes, buildings, and props, ensuring that these elements fit the overall style and narrative of the project. Their work involves modeling, texturing, and lighting to produce immersive and believable worlds. Environment artists collaborate closely with other artists and designers to optimize assets for performance while maintaining visual quality.

Role: Creative Artist - Mobile Video Ads (Gacha Role-Playing Games)

Location: Toronto, ON, M5C 1P1

Type: Full-Time, On-Site

About Us: Tier 9 Game Studios is a fast-paced mobile games company focused on creating industry-changing mobile role-playing games. Our live-service game is Auto Battles Online but we're actively developing a new game called Auto Battles World, an ambitious Gacha Idle RPG with a 2D open world. We need someone who can make our game look incredible in a 15-second video — and make people stop scrolling to watch it.

Role Overview: You'll create the short-form video ads that drive our player growth. If you love editing video, have strong instincts for what makes a viewer stop and watch, and understand what makes gacha and idle RPGs satisfying to play, this role is built for you. You'll work with gameplay footage, character art, UI elements, and original concepts to produce a high volume of video ads for Meta, TikTok, Google, and other platforms.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit and produce short-form video ads (15–30 seconds) using gameplay capture, character sprites, UI elements, and motion graphics.
  • Craft strong visual hooks in the first 2–3 seconds — the opening matters more than anything else.
  • Create multiple variants of each concept: different hooks, pacing, text overlays, CTAs, aspect ratios, and end cards.
  • Work with gameplay recordings and 2D art assets to make the game look exciting, satisfying, and worth downloading.
  • Study competitor ads and trending video formats to stay sharp on what's working in mobile gaming right now.
  • Produce at a high cadence — testing quickly and frequently is key!
  • Create promotional assets for in-game events, updates, and seasonal campaigns.
  • Build and maintain an organized library of creative assets, hooks, and performance learnings.

Qualifications:

  • Portfolio demonstrating short-form video work you personally edited and produced. This is required — applications without a portfolio will not be reviewed.
  • Strong video editing skills in tools like Premiere Pro, After Effects, CapCut, DaVinci Resolve, or similar.
  • Motion graphics skills (After Effects, animations, etc.)
  • Good eye for pacing, visual hierarchy, text placement, and mobile-first composition (vertical, sound-off, small screen).
  • Ability to produce volume without sacrificing clarity — you're comfortable shipping multiple variations per week.
  • Experience as a player of gacha, idle, or online role-playing games (MapleStory, Idleon, AFK Arena, Idle Heroes, Summoners War, Raid: Shadow Legends, etc.)
  • Experience with A.I. creative tools for scaling production (image generation, video generation, copy tools) is a strong asset.
  • Willingness to learn from performance data. You don't need to be a data analyst, but when a video gets great click-through rates, you should be curious about why — and ready to make more like it.
  • Proactive and independently motivated.
  • Positive attitude and genuine interest in mobile games!

Benefits:

  • We don't require native fluency in English, only a level of proficiency sufficient for creative work and team discussions. We're willing to accommodate for this!
  • Collaborative and creative work environment. We operate closely together and treat everyone with respect.
  • Opportunity for career advancement and skill development. This role has a clear path toward Creative Director or Marketing Lead as we grow.
  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and extended health benefits. This includes massage therapists, physiotherapists, counsellors and more!
  • Regular team meals and outings plus an abundance of in-office snacks, on the house!
  • Direct impact on the game's growth — your creatives will be the primary way players find our game.

Application Process: To apply, please submit your resume, including a link to your portfolio or creative work samples.
