Job description


Job Summary
Quality Control Technician is responsible for inspecting materials being produced, preparing and testing samples, interpreting and reporting results, and conducting routine and special laboratory testing to ensure conformance with American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM) and VMC standards on all materials. Examines causes of poor product quality, researches causes of complaints and implements corrective action. Acts as a source of knowledge to operations personnel with the ability to advise and recommend changes.
Essential Functions
• Samples and conducts testing on aggregates conforming to the appropriate standard test methods.
• Field and laboratory testing of complete product line to insure Quality Control of products at the point of production, shipping and arrival upon the jobsite.
• Test methods include but are not limited to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Department of Transportation (DOT).
• Individual must perform testing proficiently and accurately.
• Communicates test results in a timely manner to supervisor and properly documents in data base.
• Troubleshoot problems and review basic product specifications.
• Visually inspects stockpiles, materials sources, and truck loads at plant sites.
• Monitors daily the construction of the stockpile to ensure that segregation and contamination is kept to a minimum or eliminated. Notifies management immediately if contamination is identified.
• Conducts testing and assists in plant calibrations to insure the proper quality of the product.
• Completes all required reports in a timely and accurate manner. Maintains appropriate hard copy files.
• Periodically inspects, calibrates and maintains testing equipment.
• Ensures housekeeping standards are maintained in and around the lab.
• Develops and maintains relationships with state/county/city inspectors and customers to allow for proper and timely communication of test results and speedy resolution of any product quality issues or concerns.
• Other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
Education
• High School diploma or its equivalent is required.
• Some college preferred.
Experience
• This is typically an entry level position. 0 to 2 years laboratory testing experience in construction aggregate/HMA/RMC properties. Individual may have some prior training or experience in the materials testing field and demonstrates a proficiency to perform basic Quality Control duties and responsibilities.
• Certifications preferred:
• ACI Concrete Laboratory Technician Level I
• N.I.C.E.T. Level II (Asphalt & Concrete)
• State and locally required certifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Individual must possess good math and demonstrate the ability to perform simple to moderately complex arithmetic calculations.
• Maintain and calibrate testing equipment.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Google, Oracle Business Environment and other software packages relevant to the position.
• Must be attentive to detail.
• Person must have the ability to perform material testing in an orderly, efficient and accurate manner.
• Document all inspection and testing activities.
• Person must possess good verbal communications skills for dealing with plant production personnel, plant managers, customers and agency representatives.
• Ability to problem solve and work independently.
Other Requirements
• This position requires knowledge and awareness of construction and mining site hazards.
• Will be required to wear protective gear when working in the field, including gear to protect against exposure to noise, dust and hazardous materials. This will include but is not limited to safety glasses, steel toe boots, hearing protection, and hard hat.
• This requires an awareness to safeguard against possible hazards.
• Will be required to lift and transport sample buckets and bags of up to 50 pounds.
Hourly Range. The base hourly range for this role is between $22.00 - $25.00 per hour. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidate's compensation, we consider a number of factors, including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
