Job description

Description
The History Department at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for an open-rank tenure-track faculty position (assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor) in the History of Global Catholicism, understood broadly.
We invite applications from scholars who study Catholicism as a global and dynamic tradition, attending to its circulation beyond and across national frameworks, and to the ways local histories and cultures have shaped and reshaped this multicultural and multilingual institution of 1.4 billion adherents. We will also consider applications from scholars who study the impact of Catholic people, institutions, beliefs, rituals, and practices on broader global phenomena, especially but not only in the global South, including but not limited to colonization/decolonization; migration; intellectual life; social structures and social policies; gender, enslavement; international diplomacy, and more.
Position duties include research, teaching, and service. The successful candidate will be prepared to contribute to and engage with Notre Dame's Global Catholic Research Initiative, launched in 2025.
Qualifications
Candidates at the entry level must have completed all requirements for a PhD degree or have completed all but dissertation in the History of Global Catholicism or a closely related field. Candidates at the advanced assistant, associate, or full professor level must have a PhD in the History of Global Catholicism or a closely related field.
Application Instructions
Application materials (a curriculum vitae and letter of interest, including the names of three people who could be asked for letters of reference) should be submitted through Interfolio no later than October 1, 2026.
Nominations and inquiries may be sent via email to: Edward (Ted) Beatty, chair of the search committee (ebeatty@nd.edu). Information about Notre Dame is available here, and about the department at history.nd.edu.
