Job description


The City of Newberry is looking for a firefighter to join our staff! We are a progressive City and are making strides in how our firefighters work, learn, and are paid.


The Cityโ€™s fire department operates for 2236 hours annually, with work being scheduled on a 24/48 rotating shift. Call-back rates apply for interrupted sleep time while on shift, training time when scheduled off shift, working parades/events, and when returning while off duty to perform work during scheduled time off.


Our fire department was formed in 1873. We currently have 20 career firefighters and additional volunteer members. The Newberry Fire Department promotes the training of all staff fire personnel in interior structural firefighting, confined space rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, fire inspection, and fire prevention.


Firefighter I


Duties/Responsibilities:


  • Conduct fire and life safety inspections of both residential and commercial buildings throughout the Newberry area.
  • Customer service liaison through smoke detector installation, special community event staff, and school functions.
  • Plans and conducts fire and life safety education programs for all educational and age levels.
  • Responds safely and effectively to emergencies, and operates all vehicles including aerial devices, pumpers, hazardous materials response units, etc.
  • Ensures the readiness and condition of all department resources including emergency response vehicles, hand tools and equipment, and buildings/grounds.



Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Ability to pass NFPA Firefighter I Certification
  • Ability to pass a physical in accordance with NFPA 1582

Fringe Benefits:

  • 12 holidays per year + 1 annual floating birthday
  • 2 Weeks Paid Parental Leave.
  • Accrue a day of sick leave per month (7.5 hours/pay period) starting from the date of hire. Employees can accrue and roll over up to 18 weeks of sick leave annually.
  • From date of hire, employees accrue two weeks of vacation time annually (3.31 hours/pay period) up to 2 years of service; then accruals increase to three weeks (4.96 hours/pay period); at 15 years of service, accruals increase to four weeks (6.62 hours/pay period). Employees can roll over up to 8 weeks of sick leave annually.
