What is an entry level writer?

Entry level writers are individuals who are at the beginning of their writing careers, often with limited professional experience. They may create content such as articles, blog posts, marketing materials, or social media updates for businesses, websites, or publications. Entry level writers typically focus on developing their writing skills, learning about different writing styles, and building a portfolio. These positions usually require strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to take feedback and improve.

What does an entry level writer do?

The job of an entry-level writer is to help create and publish content. Someone in this role uses creative or technical writing skills to produce a story, article, or research piece. An entry-level writer typically sends their work to a senior writer or editor for editing. Many industries or employers have specific style guidelines that writers are expected to follow, so people often use this position to learn about content standards, gain experience, and develop skills. An entry-level writer frequently manages multiple assignments and performs research to ensure the accuracy of content.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Writer, you need strong writing, grammar, and research skills, typically supported by a relevant degree or coursework in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with word processing software (such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs), content management systems (CMS), and basic SEO practices is often expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and openness to feedback are essential soft skills that help new writers stand out. These skills ensure high-quality, engaging content production and enable effective collaboration with editors and team members.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level writers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level writers often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, adapting to different writing styles, and receiving constructive feedback. It's common to juggle multiple assignments while learning to meet varied editorial guidelines. To succeed, it's important to communicate proactively with editors, be open to feedback, and manage time effectively. Building strong research skills and collaborating with other team members can also help overcome initial difficulties and contribute to professional growth.

Job description

MORGAN & MORGAN   |   America's Largest Injury Firm

Federal Brief Writer

Mass Tort Law & Briefing Group  -  Complex Litigation Division

New York City (In-Office) | Entry-level position | Summer 2027 & Fall 2027 Associate Positions Available

Morgan & Morgan's Mass Tort Law & Briefing Group sits at the center of some of the most consequential plaintiff-side litigation in the country. Our Complex Litigation practice handles class actions and multidistrict litigation in federal and state venues nationwide - and the cases on our docket right now are the ones you're reading about.

Think:

  • Pharmaceutical litigation holding major drug manufacturers accountable
  • Environmental pollution cases with real communities on the other side of the caption
  • Hair relaxer litigation tied to serious cancer diagnoses
  • Processed food cases raising novel questions at the intersection of science, regulation, and consumer protection

These aren't obscure, backwater matters. They're getting coverage. They matter.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

You will report directly to the Chair of our Mass Tort Law & Briefing Group and work alongside a team of sharp, high-caliber brief writers and appellate lawyers. Day to day, that means:

  • Drafting motions, briefs, and appeals across active federal and state class action and MDL dockets (and state-law equivalents to MDL practice).
  • Deep-dive legal research - the kind that requires genuine intellectual rigor, not surface-level keyword searches.
  • Analyzing complex procedural and substantive federal issues across multiple jurisdictions simultaneously.
  • Collaborating closely with senior attorneys on litigation strategy and argument development.
  • Contributing to a practice group that is growing and doing work that sets precedent.

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Our Chair is selective. He is looking for attorneys who are genuinely excellent at the craft of legal writing and research. That said, certain backgrounds will boost your application:

  • Moot court experience is a meaningful differentiator - our Chair competed in moot court and knows firsthand how that pressure-tests your ability to construct and defend an argument. If you've done it well, say so.
  • Demonstrated drafting experience through internships, externships, or clinic work - if you've actually written briefs, motions, or research memos in a real legal setting, that stands out.
  • Law Review or other research-intensive academic work is a strong signal - this role is deeply research-driven, and the ability to synthesize complex material quickly and precisely is non-negotiable.
  • Federal clerkship experience or state-level appellate clerkship experience is valued.

We are also hiring for two specific associate tracks:

  • Summer 2027 Associate - open to current 2L students (rising 3Ls), with the hope of an end-of-summer offer for a post-graduation fall 2028 Associate position. Consideration for a permanent fall 2028 position will be based solely upon your performance during the summer 2027 position.
  • Fall 2027 Associate - open to current 3L students and current federal law clerks looking to bring their experience directly into complex litigation practice.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be based in or willing to relocate to the New York City area - this is a fully in-office role
  • Candidates must take the bar prior to start date
  • Submit at least two legal writing samples that demonstrate research depth and analytical rigor - no page or word limit; show us your best work
  • Moot court, externship, fellowship, or clinic experience demonstrating actual drafting preferred
