Entry Level Wireshark Packet Analysis focuses on analyzing network traffic and troubleshooting using Wireshark, while a Network Technician handles broader network setup, maintenance, and hardware. Both roles require similar certifications but differ in daily tasks and focus areas.

What is entry level Wireshark packet analysis?

Entry level Wireshark packet analysis involves using the Wireshark tool to capture and inspect network traffic to understand how data moves across a network. Beginners typically focus on learning how to filter packets, identify common protocols, and recognize basic network issues such as dropped connections or unusual traffic patterns. This role is essential for network troubleshooting, cybersecurity, and gaining foundational knowledge in network communication. Entry level analysts often work under supervision and gradually build expertise in interpreting more complex network data.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry-level Wireshark packet analysts when interpreting network traffic?

Entry-level Wireshark packet analysts often encounter challenges such as distinguishing between normal and suspicious network activity, understanding complex protocol structures, and managing large volumes of captured data. Additionally, it can be difficult to correlate packet-level data with higher-level network events or security incidents. Over time, analysts develop strategies for filtering, bookmarking, and annotating traffic, as well as collaborating with more experienced team members to verify findings and escalate issues when necessary.

This role sits at the intersection of RF engineering, wireless validation, automation, and system-level testing, supporting next-generation gaming and consumer technology experiences. The successful candidate will perform hands-on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi testing, develop realistic wireless coexistence scenarios, analyze performance in challenging RF environments, and help ensure high-quality user experiences across connected devices. This is an excellent opportunity to work alongside experienced RF engineers while building expertise in advanced wireless technologies, automated testing, and large-scale hardware validation.
Top Required Skills (Must Haves):
  1. RF Testing & Equipment Experience - Hands-on experience with RF test equipment including spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators, cables, connectors, and PCB-level testing used for wireless validation and performance analysis.
  2. Wireless Technologies & RF Fundamentals - Understanding of Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, wireless coexistence, antenna interactions, latency, QoS, codecs, RF measurements, dB concepts, and wireless protocol behavior in complex device ecosystems.
  3. Test Automation & Scripting - Experience creating, running, and maintaining automated test systems and scripts using Python, PowerShell, batch scripting, or similar tools to collect, analyze, and report test data.
  4. Wireless Debugging & Analysis Tools - Familiarity with packet capture and protocol analysis tools such as Wireshark, Ellisys, Omnipeek, LitePoint IQSniffer, iPerf, and Windows log analysis.

Opportunity Overview:
Join a highly experienced wireless engineering team responsible for validating Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and wireless accessory performance in complex real-world and laboratory environments. This role offers a unique blend of RF coexistence testing and system-level wireless validation, providing exposure to cutting-edge hardware, advanced test equipment, and challenging engineering problems. You will contribute directly to the quality and reliability of products used by millions of customers while developing deep expertise in wireless technologies and RF engineering fundamentals.
How you will make an impact:
• Design and execute Bluetooth and Wi-Fi coexistence test plans for gaming and wireless accessory scenarios.
• Validate wireless performance across multiple simultaneous radio technologies in congested RF environments.
• Perform RF testing using spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators, protocol testers, and related equipment.
• Configure and test Windows-based devices, applications, drivers, and wireless settings under various operating conditions.
• Execute throughput, rate-versus-range, interoperability, reconnect, stability, and long-duration wireless validation tests.
• Analyze packet captures, Windows logs, protocol traces, and wireless performance data to identify issues and recommend improvements.
• Perform Bluetooth pairing, profile configuration, protocol sniffing, and spectral analysis activities.
• Collaborate with software engineers, hardware teams, and radio chipset vendors to troubleshoot and resolve wireless issues.
• Develop and execute automated test scripts and workflows using Python, PowerShell, and other scripting tools.
• Generate test reports, summarize findings, and communicate results to engineering stakeholders.
• Support testing activities in RF chambers, shielded environments, open-air test facilities, and off-campus testing locations as needed.
The expertise you bring:
