What are Entry Level Web Accessibility Developers?

Entry Level Web Accessibility Developers are professionals who help create websites and web applications that are usable by people with disabilities. They focus on implementing accessibility standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to ensure content is perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust for everyone. Their responsibilities often include testing pages with assistive technologies, fixing accessibility issues in code, and collaborating with designers and other developers to improve user experience for all. While they may be new to the field, they play a crucial role in making the web inclusive from the start of their careers.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level web accessibility developers, and how can they overcome them?

Entry level web accessibility developers often face challenges such as understanding complex accessibility standards (like WCAG), balancing accessibility with design requirements, and identifying accessibility barriers in existing code. To overcome these challenges, it's beneficial to regularly collaborate with experienced developers, designers, and QA testers, participate in accessibility-focused code reviews, and utilize automated testing tools alongside manual testing with assistive technologies. Continuous learning and staying updated on best practices can also help new developers build confidence and proficiency in creating accessible web experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Web Accessibility Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Web Accessibility Developer, you need a solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and accessibility standards like WCAG, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with assistive technologies, accessibility testing tools, and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively and advocate for inclusive design. These competencies ensure websites are usable by all, meet legal requirements, and provide a positive user experience for people with disabilities.

Job description

Interested in joining Blue State's Tech team? Submit an application so you can be considered when a role becomes available. Please note: this is an "evergreen" job post (i.e. not an active job post), but your expression of interest matters to us. While interviews aren't ongoing, we're excited to connect with talented individuals who share our commitment to Blue State's mission.
If you came across this job via LinkedIn, please note that it is an evergreen role; LinkedIn does not differentiate, but we prefer to.
What to know
Build websites and products for good. We're looking for a Web Developer to join Blue State, a full-service agency at the forefront of digital campaigning. As a contractor on our Tech Team, you will work with platforms like WordPress, Contentful, Salesforce, Optimizely, and more to support our clients and partners in a myriad of ways. This role is perfect for a flexible web developer who is eager to help some of the most exciting progressive organizations and brands in the world.
The company
Blue State is a purpose-driven agency. We partner with leading causes, brands, and campaigns and create real change. From AARP and Doctors Without Borders to Amnesty International and Oxfam, we transform how brands and causes raise money, influence policy, build platforms, and grow communities of supporters. Led by the most creative and analytical minds from the political, nonprofit, and brand worlds, Blue State is an independent agency in the US and London.
A day in the life
  • Build websites and landing pages for our clients, writing quality code based on requirements and design comps, with attention to maintainability, scalability, performance, and accessibility.
  • Troubleshoot issues on existing platforms, looking at front-end code and software configuration.
  • Be our in-house point person for projects that are staffed primarily by vendors or client development teams. Conduct code review and document technical decisions as needed.
  • Work with members of our product, design, analytics, content, and account teams to align on requirements and process.
  • Communicate with project managers and stakeholders throughout the course of a project.
The team
The Tech Team consists of product managers, developers, tech leads, and martech specialists. We're veterans of presidential campaigns, agencies, nonprofits, and the tech world who want our work to matter, are passionate about technology, and aim to continually improve the work we do. We collaborate very closely remotely and, optionally, from our offices in New York, DC, and London.
Some things we're looking for
  • At least 3 years of experience building web pages using HTML, CSS, and modern web standards.
  • WordPress development experience. Being able to build a WordPress theme and edit PHP is a requirement, while experience using Advanced Custom Fields and Timber and building Gutenberg components using React are all pluses.
  • Front-end JavaScript experience. Neither Experience with UI frameworks such as React and Next.js, nor expertise in Node.js, are required, but either is a plus.
  • Familiarity with CRM, CDP, or marketing platforms, such as SFMC, Engaging Networks, ActionKit, Action Network, or EveryAction/NGP, or a readiness to learn.
  • Familiarity with fundraising platforms such as FundraiseUp, Classy, or Blackbaud, or a readiness to learn.
  • Familiarity with optimization and personalization platforms such as Optimizely.
  • Familiarity with Git and modern deployment and build tools and practices (i.e. devops).
  • Appreciation of the nuances of front-end performance.
  • Dedication to accessibility and experience working with designers to ensure that our experiences can be used by anyone, regardless of the assistive technology they may choose to use.
  • The ability to interpret visual design comps and implement a designer's vision, navigating challenges and trade-offs. An eye for typography, whitespace, and other details that occur at the intersection of design and code.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interpret requests from non-technical people.
  • Enthusiasm and passion for progressive advocacy and community-building.
  • Empathy, positivity, respect, and the ability to be a role model at Blue State.

Hourly rate for this position is $75-$90; compensation will be commensurate with experience.
At Blue State, diversity is a necessity, not a nice-to-have. We encourage those from underrepresented communities - women, people of color, LGBTQIA+, immigrants, those with disabilities and people at all the intersections in between - to apply. Even if you don't think your current skill set checks every box, but this role seems to align with your strengths, we want to hear from you.
Blue State is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible application and interview process. If you would like to request a reasonable accommodation for a disability, including the use of AI tools throughout the hiring process, please contact us at recruiting@bluestate.co with the subject line: Accommodation Request to get started.
