UTILITY WORKER
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
WATER/WASTEWATER DIVISION
UTILITY WORKER
STARTING AT $18.34 PER HOUR / $39,998 ANNUALLY

Under immediate supervision, performs entry-level, heavy manual, and semi-skilled work to assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
Job Functions:
  • Performs a wide range of a manual duties associated with the installation and maintenance of city utilities including digging, backfilling, breaking pavement, mixing and pouring concrete, cutting pipe, and other plumbing-type repairs.
  • Uses various hand tools to dig, sweep, spread, level, and move materials such as concrete, gravel, sand, dirt, and asphalt.
  • Must be able to drive various light equipment such as pick-up trucks, one-ton single-axle dump trucks, and farm tractors.
  • Load and unload materials, supplies, tools, and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, materials, and work area.
  • Set up barricades and flag traffic around the work site.
  • Operates power equipment including tapping machines, pumps, sewer flush truck, power saw, chain saw, air hammer, and soil tampers.
  • Operates backpack chemical sprayer to spray manholes, ditches, and roadside areas with chemicals to control insects and weeds.
  • Flushes fire hydrants, performs simple repairs, and installs adjusts, and repairs water meters.
  • Inspect manholes to detect excessive gas odors and/or stoppage.
  • Assist with setting forms around the area to be repaired, pouring concrete, and finishing surfaces of poured concrete for various maintenance projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Crew Leader/ Foreman, Field Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Assistant Director of Public Works. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of operating procedures for various light equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand operation manuals and chemical application instructions.
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices.
  • Skill in using basic utilities construction and repair techniques, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral/written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate with co-workers.
  • Ability to drive standard shift vehicles.
  • Physical ability to perform essential job duties.

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED. The ability to read and write sentences with common vocabulary.
  • Have three or six months experience performing heavy manual labor in construction, maintenance, or repair activities.

Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid Class D driver's license and to remain valid as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must pass a background screen, driver's license verification and physical exam, including a drug test.

Working Conditions:
  • Work outside exposed to extreme temperatures and inclement weather.
  • Subject to hazards of construction work including operating equipment and working around traffic.
  • Subject to excessive noise from equipment.
  • Occasionally exposed to dampness, dust, and unsanitary conditions.
  • Subject to handling and breathing irritating substances.
  • Subject to heavy lifting, as much as 50lbs. a distance of four feet from the ground and on occasion up to 100 lbs.
  • Subject to extensive standing, walking, and stooping.
  • Frequently requires kneeling, balancing, reaching, handling, and feeling.
  • Requires climbing, crouching, kneeling, bending, and crawling a distance of 300 feet.
  • Require working in confined spaces.
  • On occasion will be required to work long hours in emergencies such as system failures, or inclement weather.
  • Must wear all safety equipment following safety regulations.
