What is an entry level UX designer?

Entry level UX designers are professionals at the beginning of their careers in user experience (UX) design. They are responsible for helping to create intuitive and user-friendly digital products, such as websites and mobile apps, by focusing on the needs and behaviors of users. Their tasks often include conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and collaborating with other team members to improve overall product usability. Entry level UX designers typically work under the guidance of more experienced designers and are expected to have some foundational knowledge of design tools and principles.

What does an entry level UX designer do?

An entry-level UX designer helps design products that provide a positive customer or user experience. Their responsibilities often include working with elements of design, function, branding, and usability. Other duties of an entry-level UX designer include modifying information architecture to improve user interface (UI), creating wireframes, digital prototyping, and product testing. Someone in this position, also referred to as a junior designer, works under the supervision of an experienced designer to gain skills and professional experience. The qualifications you need to become an entry-level UX designer vary, but often include training or a postsecondary degree in computer science or a relevant field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level UX designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level UX Designer, foundational skills in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and an understanding of user-centered design principles—often supported by a degree or certification in design or a related field—are essential. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help designers effectively translate user needs into intuitive interfaces and work seamlessly with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for creating engaging, accessible digital experiences that meet both user and business goals.

What types of projects do entry level UX designers typically work on, and how much creative input can they expect to have?

Entry level UX designers often start by working on smaller features within larger projects, such as refining user flows, creating wireframes, or conducting usability tests under the guidance of senior team members. While initial creative input may be somewhat limited, many organizations encourage junior designers to share ideas during team meetings and design critiques. As you demonstrate your skills and initiative, you'll likely gain more ownership over specific components or even lead small projects. Collaboration with UI designers, developers, and product managers is a regular part of the role, providing valuable exposure to different aspects of the design process.

Is it hard to get an entry level UX designer job?

Securing an entry-level UX designer position can be competitive, but candidates with a strong portfolio, basic knowledge of design tools like Figma or Adobe XD, and understanding of user-centered design principles often find opportunities more accessible. Building relevant skills through courses, internships, or freelance projects can improve chances of landing an entry-level role.

In this role, you will work under the guidance of experienced designers, engineers, and project leads to support the development of piping layouts and design deliverables for large scale projects.

This position provides the opportunity to build core technical skills while contributing to active projects. You will be responsible for producing basic layouts, plans, sections, and elevations, while gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard design tools such as AutoCAD® and CADWorx Plant®. Through structured direction and mentorship, you will develop your capabilities in piping design, drawing standards, and project execution within a collaborative environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Strong P&ID and piping annotation skills; able to pick up red-to-black drawings using Kahuna pre-developed tools with detailed direction from supervisor, engineer, or lead.
  • Perform complex 2D modeling using Kahuna pre-developed tools with direction from experienced designers, introduction to basic 3D modeling.
  • Perform elementary pipe routing tasks under the direction of experienced designers, developing a working knowledge of basic pipe routing rules of thumb.
  • Understand and follow Kahuna’s workflow from beginning to end of a project.
  • Prepares plans, sections, details, and Bills of Material under the direction of a Senior Designer and/or Supervisor.
  • Utilizes AutoCAD® and CADWorx P&ID® to manage and create drawings adhering to company CAD and drafting standards.
  • Assist on small projects with guidance from Lead Designers, Supervisors, and Engineers.
  • Accurately back-check your own work against checked documents before submittal.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior: back-check work, learn from mistakes, constantly work toward improving efficiency, AutoCAD skills, process knowledge, and industry knowledge.
  • Begin to forecast how long tasks will take to complete; communicate workload and progress proactively to supervisor.
  • Receives introduction to Navisworks Freedom and how it is used in the design process.
  • Receives specific and detailed instruction and support from supervisor or more experienced designer.
  • Display the ability to learn quickly and make minor discretionary decisions without supervision.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

What You’ll Bring

  • 1–2 years of progressive piping design experience or equivalent technical background.
  • Basic AutoCAD® skills; follow SOPs and company workflow, learning CUI, viewports, layer properties, xrefs, AutoCAD setup, plotting, and introduction to LISP routines.
  • Familiarity with P&IDs and basic piping systems — pipe routing, fittings, instrumentation symbols.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; community college CAD/drafting coursework a plus.
  • Must be detailed oriented, precise, and organized in handling of drawings; ability to prioritize and follow instructions from others.
  • Must be a self-starter with initiative; able to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD®, CADWorx P&ID®, and Bluebeam Revu®.
