Open Rank in Neuromuscular Physical Therapy
The University of New Mexico Division of Physical Therapy is seeking a licensed physical therapist with substantial clinical experience in neurologic physical therapy and appropriate doctoral preparation to join its faculty in an open-rank, twelve-month position. The program is recruiting an individual who can provide primary instruction in the neurologic curriculum, contribute to additional content areas aligned with expertise, advise students, and engage in scholarly activity. The program seeks a flexible, collaborative educator who applies principles of evidence-based practice and is committed to advancing high quality instruction within a small, learner-centered Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

The mission of UNMPT is "we advance physical therapy". UNM is a small program (~30 students) dedicated to being the leader in physical therapy in the state of New Mexico and prides itself on high competency one-on-one instruction and pedogeological innovation. Our 11 full time core faculty enjoy a collaborative, innovative environment dedicated to advancing education, research, and service. UNM is an established program, having existed since 1974, with continuous successful accreditation, including the last cycle in 2025.
Teaching facilities include three dedicated classrooms, full access to the Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education, featuring a state-of-the-art human cadaver anatomy lab and an Interprofessional Simulation Center.
Research facilities include access to UNM Hospital, level one trauma center and regional leader in specialty care, including the newly built motion disorders clinic, and the Southwest Center for Advancing Clinical & Translational Innovation. New faculty will have access to and potentially lead the newly renovated UNM PT Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory, equipped with 12 infrared cameras, 5 force plates, a 16-channel wireless EMG, a Zeno mat, and a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer for both teaching and research.
Faculty also contribute to the REACH Clinic, a student-run pro bono clinic serving the underinsurance and uninsured local community. Faculty can also lead and participate in our international study abroad initiatives.
UNM PT program is a residential program, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Nestled in the heart of the high desert and offers a vibrant blend of culture, nature, and opportunity. The city straddles the Rio Grande and is framed by the Sandia Mountains to the east and a string of ancient volcanoes to the west. Rich in cultural diversity and surrounded by Native American Pueblos and Reservations, Albuquerque provides a unique sense of place that celebrates heritage and community. The region surrounding Albuquerque provides endless possibilities for outdoor adventures, from scenic hiking and biking trails to nearby skiing and river rafting, all within minutes of downtown.
Position Description:
Applications are invited for a full-time 12-month, open track faculty position (rank and track dependent on qualifications) in a 3-year entry-level DPT Program (http://orthopaedics.unm.edu/pt/), with 11 core faculty members and a small student body (30-36 students per class). Primary faculty responsibilities of the successful candidate include:
  • Primary teaching assignment would be in the neurologic curriculum,
  • Secondary teaching responsibilities. dependent on expertise could include; Pediatrics, Prosthetics, Specialty topics in Neurologic PT (Vestibular Rehabilitation, EMG, Concussion), Pelvic Health, and Women's Health Residency
  • Scholarship
  • Student advisement

Optional responsibilities could include:
  • Primary basic science or clinical research
  • Leadership related to the Motion Analysis Laboratory
  • Clinical, university or administrative service

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position requires a flexible, innovative, and collaborative educator who utilizes principles of evidence-based practice to encourage current standards of care in this learner-centered entry level DPT Program.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A qualified candidate must be a licensed physical therapist and have a minimum of five years of experience as a practicing physical therapist.
  • Evidence of clinical experience in neurologic physical therapy
  • In addition, the candidate must hold either a clinical (DPT) with a board specialization or academic (Ph.D., D.Sc., Ed.D.) doctoral degree.
  • Must be eligible for PT licensure in the state of NM.
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates with:
  • An academic doctoral degree (Ph.D., D.Sc., Ed.D.);
  • Experience in teaching neuromuscular physical therapy
  • Prior teaching experience in a PT professional program
  • Evidence of nationally recognized service and or scholarship activity that aligns with the requirements outlined by CAPTE
  • Board or exam-based certification related to neurological specialty
  • Fellowship training
  • Greater than five years of clinical experience
  • Teaching experience in areas compatible with programmatic needs (Management of Neurological Dysfunction, Pediatrics, Prosthetics, Specialty topics in Neurologic PT (Vestibular Rehabilitation, EMG, Concussion), Pelvic Health, and Women's Health Residency
  • A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
