Job Summary The Engineer will provide technical and engineering support to Vehicle Maintenance Department, including Everett, Rail Maintenance, and/or Bus Maintenance. The position will participate as a key member of project management teams responsible for the maintenance, procurement, testing, modification, and overhaul of new and existing vehicles, systems, and equipment.

Duties & Responsibilities Prepare technical specifications for vehicles, systems, components, equipment, and related maintenance activities. Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, inspections, project reviews, and other engineering evaluations. Inspect major systems, components, vehicles, and equipment at vendor, manufacturer, car builder, or MBTA facilities.

Review engineering drawings, manuals, test procedures, technical documentation, specifications, and proposed modifications. Participate in the testing, inspection, troubleshooting, commissioning, and acceptance of vehicles, systems, components, and equipment. Assist with planning and coordinating testing, inspections, warranty reviews, technical evaluations, and related project activities.

Investigate and assist in resolving technical issues, defects, failures, and operational concerns. Conduct failure analyses of systems, components, vehicles, and equipment, and document findings and recommended corrective actions. Perform warranty evaluations and prepare supporting analyses, findings, and documentation.

Prepare technical reports, summaries, findings, recommendations, correspondence, and other documentation as required. Remain current with the MBTA's Safety Management System Plan and fulfill all safety responsibilities associated with the position. Drive an MBTA or personal vehicle, as authorized, to inspect work sites, vendor locations, facilities, vehicles, systems, and equipment.

Support investigations involving derailments, major system failures, emergencies, safety events, and other incidents that may affect revenue service. Respond to inquiries from customers, vendors, contractors, coworkers, and other stakeholders in a professional, timely, and courteous manner. Adhere to all Authority rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and applicable collective bargaining agreements, including EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation requirements.

Protect the rights and interests of the Authority while developing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, vendors, contractors, and stakeholders. Staff the Operations Control Center Vehicle Maintenance desk as assigned, providing technical support, coordination, communication, and incident response for vehicle maintenance issues, service disruptions, emergencies, and other operational needs. Perform all other duties and projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications Zero (0) to three (3) years of engineering experience.

Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. Ability to analyze electrical circuits, parameters, components, and related failure mechanisms. Knowledge of electrical and/or mechanical components and their interaction with rail transit vehicles, systems, and equipment.

Knowledge of real-time networks, including network communication theory, testing, design, and applications. Ability to understand electrical, operational, and mechanical characteristics of rail transit vehicles and related systems. Effective organizational, analytical, time management, problem-solving, and multi-tasking skills.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, mainframe systems, and/or database applications. Ability to communicate effectively with regulatory agencies, community organizations, vendors, internal departments, and other stakeholders on technical and sensitive matters. Excellent customer service, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.

Ability to provide internal and external customers with a courteous, professional, and responsive experience. Preferred Experience & Skills Three (3) years or more of engineering experience. Experience working with transit vehicles, vehicle systems, fleet equipment, or related transportation systems.

Experience with network-control, vehicle-communication, diagnostic, or real-time monitoring systems. Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op.
