Job description

We are looking for a talented  Customer Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Business Service segment in Salt Lake City, UT.

Job Summary:

This entry level/early career professional, dual customer/product focused position serves as the technical liaison between OEMs and represents our customers during new product development programs. Applying Cummins' products to customer vehicles requires the development of technical specifications, implementing new design configurations, and delivering high performance, low-cost equipment and system solutions integrated with customers' products in a variety of applications. Integrating high quality and optimized customer solutions requires the interaction with sales and marketing teams.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways: 

  • Drive rootcause resolution by investigating integration and installation issues, understanding causal mechanisms, recommending corrective actions, and owning documentation of results.
  • Strengthen installation quality by applying and improving key processes such as Installation Quality Assurance, OEM integration, and product selection using tools like Advisor, COLS, and GCE.
  • Enable crossfunctional alignment by gathering input from SMEs and VPI teams, negotiating requirements, and delivering accurate product data and installation guidance to Application Engineers and OEMs.
  •  Influence machine performance through sound decisions on product selection, design, and integration that directly affect OEM optimization, reliability, and quality.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison by building strong relationships with customer technical counterparts, managing specifications, communicating product changes, and resolving installation issues.
  • Translate customer needs into functional product requirements using deep product, application, and market knowledge to support OEM product selection and equipment design.
  • Ensure flawless installations by validating prototype machine performance, confirming compliance with Cummins requirements, and ensuring products are applied correctly for customer environments.
  • Advance team execution by independently executing established processes, contributing to continuous improvement, coordinating technician or student work when needed, and influencing team goals.

Core Responsibilities / Activities

  • Serve as the primary technical liaison between OEM customers and cross-functional internal teams during product integration, installation, and issue resolution activities.
  • Lead Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) reviews, support prototype machine validation, and drive timely resolution of customer and field-related technical concerns.
  • Coordinate with Sales, service, controls/calibration, manufacturing, and design engineering teams to support successful product implementation and customer satisfaction.

Skill, Education, or Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related STEM field required.
  • Experience supporting OEM customers, product integration, machine systems, or technical troubleshooting activities.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a customer-focused environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical requirements, installation guidelines, and engineering documentation while working across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Skills or Experience

  • Prior experience with off-highway equipment, engine integration, or Installation Quality Assurance (IQA) processes.
  • Familiarity with Cummins technical systems, OEM development processes, or customer support environments preferred.

  • Deliver strong product application support by creating accurate technical content, defining installation requirements, and using Cummins tools to guide OEM design and sales decisions.
  • Influence design through modeling and simulation by interpreting analytical and computational results to shape product capability at the system, subsystem, and component levels.
  • Ensure installation quality by validating prototype performance, applying standard Cummins processes, and driving improvements that reduce rework and ensure compliance.
  • Solve product problems effectively by identifying root causes, implementing robust corrective actions, and preventing recurrence through datadriven analysis.
  • Guide product selection by matching customer applications with the right Cummins offerings, optimizing specifications, and preventing misapplication through strong technical judgment.
  • Lead technical customer management by serving as the primary technical interface, communicating product changes, providing engineering data, and ensuring seamless customer integration and operation.
    Education, Licenses, Certifications:
    College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
    Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
    This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
    Experience:
    Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred
