Overview
The Engineer I (Transportation - Bridges) is an entry-level position designed to provide hands-on experience and foundational professional development within a collaborative engineering environment. This role supports project teams in the planning, design, and production of engineering deliverables while gaining exposure to real-world projects across multiple disciplines. This role can sit in either Tallahassee, FL or Baton Rouge, LA.
Working under close supervision, the Engineer I partners with project managers and experienced engineers to assist with technical tasks, data preparation, and coordination activities. This position emphasizes learning and skill development, offering opportunities to become familiar with engineering tools, industry standards, and internal processes, as well as introductory exposure to client interaction and cross-functional collaboration. The Engineer I is expected to progressively build technical competency, professional judgment, and communication skills, establishing a strong foundation for advancement into more independent engineering roles.

Responsibilities
Team Collaboration & Communication
  • Support engineers and project managers with design development, calculations, documentation, and production tasks under close supervision.
  • Participate in team meetings and project coordination efforts, assisting with task tracking and follow-up items.
  • Communicate effectively with internal team members and managers to share progress, ask questions, and seek guidance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to gain exposure to integrated project delivery and cross-discipline coordination.

Technical Development & Oversight
  • Perform bridge Structures design and structural analysis.
  • Conduct bridge load rating in accordance with applicable standards.
  • Prepare bridge plans, drawings, and annotations using AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Perform bridge condition inspections and field evaluations.
  • Assist with bridge load testing and data collection.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, calculations, and documentation.
  • Perform other engineering duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in a related engineering field, Master's degree is a plus
  • 0-4 years of relevant experience
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or intent to obtain within six months if necessary

Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD and Microstation.
  • Solid understanding of relevant design manuals, standards, and specifications (e.g., AASHTO LRFD, AISC, PCI).
  • Familiarity with structural analysis tools such as AASHTOWare and RC-Pier; experience with finite element software (e.g., MIDAS) is a plus.

Communication and Organization
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to ask questions, receive feedback, and communicate effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while collaborating effectively on multidisciplinary project teams.
