What is an entry level startup?

An Entry Level Startup job is a position at a new or early-stage company designed for individuals with little to no prior professional experience. These roles often require adaptability, creativity, and a willingness to take on diverse tasks in a fast-paced environment. Employees in these positions may work on marketing, product development, customer support, or operations, depending on the company's needs. Because startups are typically small and dynamic, entry-level employees have the opportunity to learn a wide range of skills and grow quickly in their careers.

What types of tasks and responsibilities can I expect in an entry level startup position?

In an entry-level startup role, your daily tasks can vary widely and may include supporting product development, assisting with market research, organizing team meetings, or handling customer inquiries, depending on the specific needs of the company. You'll likely collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, providing input and support where it’s needed most, which helps you build a broad skill set. It's common to wear multiple hats, so flexibility and a willingness to learn new processes are important. This dynamic work environment offers a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience, quickly build your professional network, and potentially grow into more specialized roles as the startup expands.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the entry level startup position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an entry-level role at a startup, you need a mix of analytical skills, adaptability, and a proactive attitude, usually supported by a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools like Slack, project management platforms (such as Trello or Asana), spreadsheets, and basic marketing or coding platforms can be valuable depending on the startup’s focus. Strong communication, resilience in fast-changing environments, and collaborative problem-solving help you stand out. These abilities are essential because startups often require team members to quickly learn new skills, adapt to shifting priorities, and contribute broadly to dynamic projects.

Job description

ABOUT THE FIRM

Falcon Rappaport & Berkman (FRB) is a dynamic and rapidly growing law firm committed to an interdisciplinary approach to legal practice. Our team comprises thought leaders across diverse practice areas, including nationally recognized experts in taxation, corporate law, and emerging technologies, and we intentionally integrate agentic workflows into our practice. By integrating specialists from multiple disciplines, we deliver innovative and comprehensive solutions that exceed client expectations. At FRB, we prioritize respect, appreciation, and work-life balance, fostering an environment where our team members thrive both personally and professionally. We are dedicated to investing in our employees' growth through mentorship, continuing education, and meaningful career advancement opportunities.

ABOUT THE POSITION

AI is central to the practice, output and process matters more than hours, and the associate who finds a faster, better way to do something is rewarded for it and gets to share that process with other attorneys in the firm.

You need judgment, drive, and real fluency with AI. We will teach you litigation. We want you to bring with you your desire to build effective process, passion and service-oriented mindset it takes to represent clients well.

This position is a hybrid role, where we want you to work where you work best, however, periodic court appearances in New Jersey and New York will be required, and an expectation of occasional in office presence in our New York and growing Newark offices once or twice a week. FRB has a robust social culture, with outings and events every month. To take full advantage of these in person events and learning and mentoring opportunities, we encourage some in-office time, flexible around your schedule.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Entrepreneurial. If you built, ran, or shipped something before law school, we want to hear about it. We also want to hear your vision for an AI enabled legal practice.

  • Genuinely interested in AI in the practice of law. You use these tools because you are fascinated by what they make possible and your role in building the future of the legal practice.

  • Technically fluent with AI. You know which model suits which task, how to manage context and token utilization, and how to iterate on prompts and workflows until they work as intended.

  • Assertive by nature. You advocate for yourself, push back when you disagree, and ask direct questions. When you do not know an answer, you are empowered to find it.

  • Sharp in your judgment. You know when AI output is reliable, when it needs a lawyer's hand, and when to escalate. You verify everything before you rely on it, and you build that discipline into your workflow.

  • Urgent and relentless in follow-through. You respond fast, close loops without being reminded, and nothing you own falls through the cracks. Proactive client updates are part of the job and belong in your workflow.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Build, test, and continuously iterate AI-powered workflows for legal research, drafting, document review, and case analysis, then document what works.

  • Draft pleadings, motions, briefs, discovery requests and responses, and memoranda, using AI where it adds speed and quality, and your own skill where it does not.

  • Support all phases of discovery, including document review, written discovery, and depositions.

  • Appear in New Jersey and New York state and federal courts for conferences and hearings as you develop.

  • Communicate proactively with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel, and own the status and next steps on your matters.

  • Support your managing attorney on case strategy, trial preparation, and dispute resolution.

  • Identify inefficiencies in how the team works, then fix them.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

  • Admission, or pending admission, to the New Jersey and New York Bars.

  • 0–5 years of experience. We’re seeking entry-level to experienced associate candidates with the desire to integrate AI into their legal practice. This could be a true entry-level role for the right candidate. An entry-level candidate must have already taken at least the New Jersey bar exam.

  • Demonstrated hands-on use of generative AI (for example, Claude, Harvey, CoCounsel, or tools you built yourself). Be prepared to walk us through workflows you have created, including how you select models and manage context.

  • Entrepreneurial, startup, or operating background strongly preferred.

  • Strong legal and analytical reasoning.

  • A track record of ownership, such as a business, a project, or a process you ran end to end.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Salary range: $105,000 - $140,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • Performance bonuses and discretionary bonuses.

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance with 401(k) plan with firm contribution.

  • Paid time off and firm holidays.

  • CLE support, bar expense support, mentorship, and direct training from your managing attorney.

*Send your resume and a brief note describing an AI workflow you have built, the problem it solved, the tools and models you chose, and how you iterated, to careers@frblaw.com with the subject line “AI-Native Litigation Associate.” No cover letter required; the workflow note is your cover letter.
