Job description

Function The purpose of the class is to promote the City of Hampton as a viable destination for tourism, sports, and conventions through press releases, social media outlets, and direct contact with clients. The class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. Typical Task: Develop and implement media relations and communications strategies.

Pitch Hampton stories to national, regional, travel, and sports media outlets. Build relationships with journalists, travel writers, influencers, and content creators. Write and distribute press releases, articles, media kits, newsletters, and promotional content.

Coordinate media tours and familiarization visits. Monitor and analyze media coverage across print, online, broadcast, and podcast platforms. Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to promote Hampton's visitor experiences and events.

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in English, Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or a closely related field. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of full-time equivalent experience in any of the following environments: media relations, public relations, communications, marketing, or a closely related experience. Requires knowledge of Associated Press journalism standards with a proven track record of media placement.

A combination of education and experience, and may be considered for the more specific requirements outlined above. Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion. Must possess a valid driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.

Additional Requirements: Requires effective communication with internal and external customers. Must be able to communicate and write clearly, concisely, and creatively. Requires the ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines; ability to foster effective public relations and develop and maintain harmonious working relationships with diverse populations.

Requires some evening and weekend work. Requires local travel and use of a personal vehicle. The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during city emergencies, or at the direction of the City Manager or designee, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
