Join Vancer and Help Keep America's Railroads Moving

Vancer designs, builds, and supports innovative maintenance-of-way (MOW) equipment for the railroad industry. Our employees are the foundation of our success, and we're committed to providing the tools, training, and support needed to help our team thrive.

We are seeking a highly skilled Resident Technician to support railroad customers throughout the Southwest region. Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to Albuquerque, NM, Flagstaff, AZ, or Kingman, AZ. This position offers significant independence, customer interaction, and the opportunity to work on advanced railroad maintenance equipment in the field.

Position Overview

As a Resident Technician, you will serve as the primary service contact for customers within your assigned territory, providing diagnostics, repairs, preventive maintenance, and technical support on Vancer and Caterpillar equipment. This role requires strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, a customer-focused mindset, and the ability to work independently in field environments.

You will inspect, diagnose, repair, remove, install, disassemble, assemble, and perform failure analysis on a wide range of machine systems, including:

  • Diesel engines

  • Hydraulic systems

  • Electrical and electronic controls

  • Powertrain and transmission systems

  • Brake and steering systems

  • Attachments and auxiliary equipment

  • Computer-based diagnostic systems

What You'll Do

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, service, and repair customer equipment at field locations

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, safety checks, and operational testing

  • Utilize service manuals, diagnostic software, and technical resources to identify and resolve equipment issues

  • Conduct failure analysis and determine root causes of component and system failures

  • Complete accurate service reports, work orders, warranty documentation, expense reports, and time entries

  • Order, track, and return parts through established service processes

  • Verify warranty eligibility and manage core and remanufactured component returns

  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships through responsive service and technical expertise

  • Identify opportunities to reduce customer downtime and recommend additional maintenance or repair solutions

  • Support business growth by maintaining regular contact with customers throughout the assigned territory

  • Follow all Vancer and customer safety requirements, including contamination control and HAZMAT procedures

What We're Looking For

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills

  • Experience with heavy equipment, railroad equipment, construction equipment, diesel engines, or similar machinery

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Strong customer service and communication skills

  • Experience using electronic diagnostic tools and software

  • Ability to travel throughout the assigned region as needed

  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
