JOB SUMMARY

The ED RN will perform under the supervision of the ED physician or provider, demonstrate proficiency in administering the fundamentals of the nursing process, and shares responsibility for individual patients or an entire patient population.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the ED Nursing Director or designee

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Education:

Graduate of an accredited RN program

Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate of Science in Nursing (ADN) degree required.

Work Experience:

A minimum of one year of work experience preferred.

License/Certification:

Current Tennessee State or Compact State Registered Nurse License with no restrictions

Current CPR/Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or obtain within 30 days of hire date.

Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required for full-time employees within 1 year of hire date.

Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required for full-time employees within 1 year of hire date.

Current Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) preferred.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Nursing/Patient Care:

Provides safe, quality, compassionate direct and indirect patient care.

Communicates with patients and family to gather data pertinent to patient care.

Performs triage, considering both physical and psychosocial elements.

Performs screening tests such as sepsis as required based on standards prepared by education and experience.

Reports observations, symptoms, reactions, and improvements or declines in the patient's condition to the provider and provides appropriate interventions per protocols, standards of care, or provider orders.

Takes patient vital signs and measurements (i.e., height, length, and weight)

Prepares and administers IM and IV injections, PO medications, and nebulizer treatments according to HMC policies and procedures.

Assists with phlebotomy.

Performs and documents the initial physical assessment.

Assesses and reassesses pain per policy.

Performs treatments and procedures under the direction of the provider.

Manages basic life support needs and stabilizes patients until the provider is available based on nursing standards and protocols.

Adheres to the nurse practice act.

Prepares, administers, and records immunizations and medications as regulatory agency policies permits.

Initiates patient education and teaches patient and patient representative how to manage their conditions through diet, exercise, medication administration and other avenues as directed by the provider.

Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment for patient care.

Documents observations, assessments, procedures, and other relevant information in the EHR and delivers oral hand off reports.

Quality/Safety:

Promotes a culture of safety for patients and employees through proper identification, reporting, documentation, and prevention.

Maintains hospital standards for clean and quiet patient environment to provide a positive patient care experience.

Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities.

Adheres to infection-control policies, practices protocols, and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards.

Maintains compliance with HMC policies including established practices, protocols, and procedures of the position, department, and applicable professional standards.

Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, DNV standards and /or standards from other approved accrediting agencies.

Complies with HMC and regulatory policies regarding confidential patient information (HIPAA).
