JOB TITLE: Elecrician
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
PAY RANGE: $20.00-$30.00 per hour DOE
SUMMARY
Works aboard U.S. Navy Surface ships, performs shipboard repairs, and installs simple and/or complex modifications to electrical equipment utilizing plans, schematics, sketches, blue prints or written and/or verbal instructions. Repairs; troubleshoots, replaces electrical equipment including: motor and logic controllers, switchboard mods, load centers, buss transfer switches, electrical circuits and tests specialized electrical systems; able to do work of an electrician under general supervision, maybe asked to provide guidance to entry level electricians as well as perform additional non electrician related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Repair or replace wiring equipment or fixtures, using hand tools or power tools
  • Examine electrical system of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, like ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to confirm compatibility and safety of system
  • Use different types of tools or equipment, like power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, like oscilloscopes, ammeters, or check lamps
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, or roofs to put in, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures
  • Diagnose faulty systems, apparatus, or parts, using equipment and hand tools to find the reason for a breakdown and correct the problem
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, or parts to spot hazards, defects, or the necessity for adjustment or repair, and to confirm compliance with codes
  • Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to see the placement of wiring or equipment, and to confirm correspondence to assembling and safety codes
  • Place passage pipes, or tubing, within selected partitions, walls, or alternative hidden areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the passage to finish circuits between boxes
  • Work on the installation of ground leads and connect power cables to equipment, like motors
  • Direct or train other employees to put in, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures
  • Provide preliminary sketches or value estimates for materials or services
  • Provide help in times of emergencies by operating floodlights or generators, inserting flares, or driving required vehicles
  • Work on installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of marine electrical (AC/DC) and electronic systems

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • A working Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items
  • Willingness to learn and work to the best of his/her abilities and have a dependable work ethic
  • Ability to read and interpret documents furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form including but not limited to safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, quality manuals and procedure manuals

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent, plus technical/vocational training or the equivalent combination of education, technical training or work experience. - Electrician's license or connector certification preferred but not required

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Within the shipyard, minimal exposure to extreme temperatures, high noise levels, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, outdoor weather conditions, dusty conditions, wet and/or humid conditions, hazardous machinery
