Oxbow Calcining LLC is currently looking for an Assistant Project Manager to join the team in Baton Rouge, LA.
The Assistant Project Manager supports the planning, execution, and closeout of capital projects, facility upgrades, and construction activities within an operating industrial processing facility. This role partners closely with engineering, maintenance, operations, contractors, and vendors to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, and within budget while minimizing disruption to plant operations. This is a hands-on role ideal for an early-career engineer or construction professional seeking to build technical expertise, project management capabilities, and field execution experience within a fast-paced industrial environment.
Essential Job Duties
Project & Construction Management
  • Responsible for planning and execution of small to mid-scale capital and maintenance projects
  • Coordinate day-to-day construction activities with contractors, plant operations, maintenance, safety, and environmental personnel.
  • Track project schedules, budgets, change orders, and field progress.
  • Support bid solicitation, contractor evaluations, and scope development.
  • Review contractor invoices and assist with cost tracking and forecasting.
  • Justify and present project proposals to upper management for budget approval.

Engineering & Technical Support
  • Assist with development and review of scopes of work, layouts, drawings, and calculations.
  • Coordinate with internal and external engineering resources as needed.
  • Support equipment installations, tie-ins, and commissioning activities.

Safety & Compliance
  • Comply with all of Oxbow's Health, Safety & Environment Policies.
  • Assist in Environmental Compliance Program.
  • Enforce site safety rules and contractor compliance with facility safety policies.
  • Participate in Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), pre-job meetings, and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure construction activities comply with applicable codes, standards, and plant procedures.
  • Maintain safety standards to ensure employees and contractors are complying with Oxbow Calcining's policies to include but not limited to: wearing proper personal protective equipment, maintaining housekeeping standards, reviewing and performing JSA's and SOP's, confined space permits, hot work permits, lock-out tag-out procedures, and quarterly safety card compliance.

Field Oversight & Coordination
  • Perform frequent field walks to verify work quality, progress, and adherence to drawings/specifications.
  • Identify constructability issues and escalate technical concerns early.
  • Coordinate construction around operating equipment and production schedules.

Documentation & Closeout
  • Maintain organized project documentation, MOCs, including drawings, RFIs, change orders, and as-built records.
  • Support project closeout activities, including punch lists, turnover documentation, and lessons learned.
  • Generate and manage Capital Expenditure documentation, including AFEs, Cost Detail Reports, and NOCs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic understanding of industrial construction practices, mechanical and/or electrical systems, and contractor coordination.
  • Establishes goals and objectives which are specific, measurable, achievable and relevant.
  • Familiarity with P&IDs, equipment drawings, layouts, and scheduling tools (MS Project or similar).
  • Basic cost estimating and budgeting experience.
  • CAD experience preferred.

Requirements
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial) or Construction Management, or equivalent experience.
  • 0-3 years of experience in industrial projects, construction, maintenance, or engineering support roles.
  • Internship or co-op experience in industrial facilities, construction management, or manufacturing/processing plants preferred.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, self-driven professional with excellent Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills, capable of organizing, analyzing, and presenting information clearly and effectively. They are an excellent communicator with strong attention to detail, comfortable coordinating with multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced industrial environment.

Physical and Other Requirements
  • Typically works in plant environment, which may include extreme working conditions and inclement weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in confined spaces and in elevated work areas.
  • Physical ability to work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders.
  • As needed, lifts, carries or otherwise moves and positions objects weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • Willingness to work around dust, chemicals, and other substances.
  • Ability to wear personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel toed boots and hearing protection).
  • Willingness to obtain required training as needed.
  • Should be able to work both indoors and outdoors.
  • Must be able to travel as needed.
  • Must be willing to work periods in excess of 8 hours and seven days a week when needed.
  • Must possess a valid US Driver's License.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be able to pass general physical testing.
