What does an entry level process engineer do?

An Entry Level Process Engineer assists in designing, implementing, and optimizing processes within manufacturing or production environments. They typically work under the supervision of senior engineers to analyze workflows, improve efficiency, ensure safety standards, and troubleshoot production issues. Their responsibilities may also include collecting and interpreting data, preparing technical reports, and supporting quality control measures. This role provides hands-on experience and foundational skills in process engineering, often serving as a starting point for a career in the field.

What are some typical challenges faced by entry level process engineers during their first year on the job?

Entry level process engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to complex technical systems, understanding industry-specific regulations, and learning to communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. They may also need to quickly grasp company-specific processes and standards while balancing multiple projects under tight deadlines. Seeking mentorship, asking questions, and actively participating in team meetings can help new engineers overcome these hurdles and accelerate their professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level process engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Process Engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in chemical, mechanical, or industrial engineering and a solid understanding of process design and optimization fundamentals. Familiarity with process simulation software (such as Aspen HYSYS or MATLAB) and knowledge of safety and quality standards are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in project environments. These skills ensure efficient process improvements, adherence to safety protocols, and successful collaboration within engineering teams.

Delva Tool & Machine

Job description

The Opportunity

Delva Tool & Machine is mid-transformation. We make tight-tolerance precision components for aerospace and defense customers, and our D1 facility is ready to move from tribal knowledge to documented, repeatable, technology-backed processes. Your job is to get us there: map the current state, identify the gaps, and start closing them, starting with five to ten core SKUs in the first 90 days.

What You Will Own
  • Evaluate current-state workflows and build a gap analysis that drives a clear action plan for DNC implementation, spindle monitoring software, RFID tooling management, and ERP process integration.
  • Develop and own manufacturing process plans (MPPs), work instructions, and quality control plans (QCPs) for assigned jobs, from first article through production.
  • Get the workflow right for an initial set of five to ten SKUs: process packages complete, tooling and fixturing specified, and floor-level execution confirmed.
  • Coordinate with Programming on job launches and with Quality on in-process inspection criteria, FAI planning, and non-conformance root cause investigations.
  • Identify and drive process improvement opportunities that reduce cycle time, improve yield, or lower cost, using data from the monitoring and ERP systems you help put in place.
  • Build and maintain process documentation in our document control system so that what works in week one is still working correctly in year three.
What We Bring

Delva is an AS9100 Rev D certified CNC machine shop in Cinnaminson, NJ. We hold tolerances to ±0.0002" across aluminum and exotic alloys including titanium, stainless steel, and tool steels, and the parts we produce go into aerospace and defense applications where there is no margin for error. Our floor runs two shifts on Vertical Mills, Lathes, Swiss Lathes, and Mazak 5-axis horizontals with robotic loaders and automated pallet systems. This is not a generic job shop: the equipment is serious, the customers are demanding, and the work you do here has a direct line to finished parts that fly and defend.

What You Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on work experience in a precision machining environment).
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.
  • Hands-on familiarity with CNC machining operations and the process documentation that supports them (work instructions, MPPs, inspection plans).
  • Methodical, organized approach to documentation: you write things down, keep them current, and build systems that others can follow.
  • Comfortable working in a regulated environment, including ITAR data handling and quality management system requirements.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with DNC systems, spindle monitoring software, RFID-based tooling management, or ERP implementation in a machining environment.
  • Industrial engineering background with formal process improvement or workflow design experience.
  • AS9100 or aerospace/defense program experience, including FAI, source inspection, or audit support.
  • Management or team lead experience (a real differentiator for this role).
  • Familiarity with Mazak equipment or 5-axis horizontal machining workflows.
Benefits and Perks

$24.04 - $60.10/hr. ($50,000 - $125,000/yr), depending on experience level. We hire across three levels for this role (Process Engineer I, II, and III), so the range reflects entry-level through senior. You will be placed and compensated based on what you actually bring. Our comprehensive benefits package includes, but is not limited to, a competitive pay rate, accrued vacation time, 10 paid holidays, 401(k) retirement plan with a 4% company match (100% vested on day one), medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as Short-Term Disability, Long-Term Disability, Life/AD&D insurance, and more!

Core Values

  • Team-First Mentality – We collaborate, communicate, and support each other, knowing that success comes from effective collaboration.
  • Integrity in Everything – We do what’s right, even when no one is watching. Honesty, transparency, and respect guide our decisions.
