Entry Level Plumbing Engineer information

What does an entry level plumbing engineer do?

An entry level plumbing engineer assists in the design, planning, and implementation of plumbing systems for residential, commercial, or industrial buildings. Their duties often include creating drawings, selecting appropriate materials, performing calculations, and ensuring designs comply with local codes and standards. They work under the supervision of senior engineers and may also visit construction sites to observe installations or resolve technical issues. This role is ideal for recent graduates with a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field who are looking to gain practical experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level plumbing engineer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Plumbing Engineer, you need a bachelor's degree in mechanical or civil engineering, solid understanding of plumbing systems, and foundational knowledge of building codes. Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, and hydraulic calculation software is typically required, and EIT certification is often an advantage. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively and deliver accurate designs. These skills ensure compliance, safety, and efficiency in plumbing system planning and execution.

What types of projects and tasks can an entry level plumbing engineer expect to work on during their first year?

As an entry level plumbing engineer, you will typically assist senior engineers with designing plumbing systems for a variety of building types, such as commercial offices, hospitals, or schools. Your daily tasks may include preparing drawings using CAD software, performing calculations for water supply and drainage, reviewing construction documents, and conducting site visits to observe installation. You'll also collaborate closely with architects and other engineering disciplines to ensure integrated system designs. This hands-on experience provides a strong foundation for learning industry standards and advancing to more complex responsibilities over time.

Job description

The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design of plumbing systems as part of a team that designs buildings and support systems for food processing plants and warehouses. The candidate will be responsible for the design and specification of plumbing systems. Any fire protection and HVAC design experience will be a plus. You will work on projects from concept to issuing of construction drawings through construction administration efforts such as the review of equipment submittals and technical support. This position involves advanced technical knowledge and the ability to work with cross-functional teams. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment and be capable of delivering innovative solutions while ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Size utilities equipment (hot water heating, cold water booster packages, compressed air, etc.) and piping distribution systems (hot water, cold water, compressed air, natural gas, etc.) by totalizing the loads from data available from owner/process provided equipment, hot/cold water requirements for restroom fixtures, analysis of metering data, HVAC and refrigeration equipment needs, and using engineering judgement for diversity or appropriate safety factors.
  • Produce pipe material and insulation schedules and work with vendors as required to select equipment and produce equipment schedules for the drawings.
  • Design Plumbing gravity drainage systems such as sanitary, storm, and process waste. This will include venting, isometric riser diagrams, pipe, and fixture schedules.
  • Produce drawings using Revit 3D modeling software (occasionally AutoCAD) or oversee Designers/Engineers assigned to the project team to produce the drawings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including architects, civil engineers, electrical engineers, structural engineers, process engineers, design project managers, construction Project managers, owners, etc.
  • Conduct building assessments and feasibility studies to evaluate design options for clients. This may include equipment pricing from vendors, but installation pricing would be performed by others at Stellar.
  • Adhere to project timelines and budgets.
  • The candidate will be responsible for conceptual development, detailed design, calculations, construction level documents, oversight of Revit production resources, responding to RFIs, shop drawing and submittal review, site inspection visits, and record drawings. Depending on the Plumbing Engineer's Level the expectations will increase. At the entry level 1 position the engineer will have higher level engineers mentoring them, whereas level 2 & 3 Engineers and Senior Engineers will be doing independent work and may be managing team members assigned to their projects, while ensuring project requirements, schedule, and overall document quality are met. Inter-discipline coordination, BIM clash detection, and site inspections will be required. The candidate must be a team player and committed to the quality of work generated.
  • Fire Protection and HVAC design experience will be considered a plus. Skills of interest include:
    • Fire Protection - the ability to analyze flow tests, hydraulically size sprinkler piping such as site service feeds, loops, mains, and sprinkler distribution using software (Stellar uses Hydracalc) and then provide sizing/selections of sprinklers, fire pump boosters, and tanks.
    • HVAC - the ability to size equipment by totalizing the loads from data available from the owner/process provided equipment needs, and calculating the cooling and heating loads using internal load spreadsheets and load estimating software such as Trane Trace or IESVE. Size associated ductwork by doing velocity and pressure drop calculations. Produce HVAC ductwork material and insulation schedules and work with vendors as required to select equipment and produce equipment schedules for the drawings. Provide controls sequencing of operations, pressurization, and hygienic zoning.
  • Other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, applicable codes, and standards such as ASME, ASHRAE, International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Fuel and Gas Code, International Energy Code, etc.
  • Verbal and written communication skills to convey complex technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with team members, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and meet milestones.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical data and drawings.
  • Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in using mechanical engineering software and tools and Microsoft products such as Excel, Word, Teams, and Outlook.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
