Job description

Engineer - High Energy Piping (HEP) Stress Analysis
Southern Company Services - TSS Mechanical Systems Boiler/Piping Department

WORK LOCATION & TRAVEL

  • This position will be based out of The Energy Center in Birmingham, AL
  • Work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently four (4) days in-office and one (1) day telecommute (subject to adjustment).
  • This position will require a mix of both field and office work. 
  • Field work can include site visits to various generating facilities and may require overnight travel.
  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 50%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

SUMMARY OF POSITION DUTIES

This position is assigned to the Technical Shared Services, Mechanical Field Services department. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide stress analysis and specification of supports for HEP retrofit and new generation projects.

The successful candidate will be expected to support other work activities as they gain experience in the position to include, but not be limited to, the following:  

  • Inspection and evaluation of HEP support systems
  • Field evaluation of HEP dynamic loading events
  • Providing technical direction in the NDE inspection of HEP welds and components
  • Participation in HEP related industry groups (e.g. ASME/EPRI)
  • Application of ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education: 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university or PE license with related experience
  • Mechanical or Civil/Structural Engineering degree preferred

Experience: 

Required:

  • Detailed knowledge of HEP stress analysis principles and techniques
  • Detailed knowledge of Bentley AutoPIPE piping stress analysis software
  • Working knowledge of HEP supports, including variable spring, constant and snubber function and design 
  • Working knowledge of formal calculation documentation processes
  • General understanding of fossil power plant systems and operations

Preferred:

  • Fossil power plant field experience working with HEP 
  • Fossil power plant field experience inspecting/troubleshooting HEP hanger and structural issues 
  • General knowledge of HEP NDE inspection techniques
  • Working knowledge of the ASME B31.1 Power Piping Code applicable to piping design and analysis
  • Experience in the detailed design of HEP supports
  • Experience working with contractors
  • General knowledge of ASTM specifications for piping, structural shapes, plates and bars
