What is an entry level paralegal legal assistant?

Entry Level Paralegal Legal Assistants are professionals who support lawyers by performing a variety of administrative and legal tasks. Their responsibilities often include preparing legal documents, conducting research, organizing files, and assisting with case management. As entry-level employees, they typically work under the supervision of attorneys or senior paralegals and gain practical experience in legal procedures. This role is a common starting point for those interested in a legal career, offering valuable exposure to law firm operations and legal processes.

How does an entry level paralegal legal assistant typically collaborate with attorneys and other team members?

As an entry level paralegal legal assistant, you will regularly support attorneys by preparing legal documents, organizing case files, and conducting initial research. Collaboration is frequent—expect to work closely with attorneys to ensure deadlines are met and assist with trial preparation. You may also coordinate with other paralegals, clerks, and administrative staff to keep case materials up to date and maintain effective communication within the team. This teamwork is essential for the smooth operation of legal proceedings and provides valuable learning opportunities for your career growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level paralegal legal assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Paralegal Legal Assistant, you need a solid understanding of legal terminology, research skills, and at least an associate’s degree or paralegal certificate. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, document management systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Office are commonly required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective written and verbal communication set top candidates apart. These abilities are vital to ensure accuracy, support attorneys efficiently, and maintain smooth legal operations.

Can I become an entry level paralegal legal assistant with no experience?

Entry level paralegal legal assistants can often start with little to no experience if they have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and basic knowledge of legal procedures. Many employers provide on-the-job training and may require a relevant certificate or associate degree in paralegal studies. Gaining familiarity with legal software and document management can also improve job prospects for beginners.

Is it hard to get an entry level paralegal legal assistant position?

Job description

About the Opportunity
Equivity is seeking an experienced Legal Assistant with strong, hands-on experience using Clio Manage and Clio Grow to support day-to-day law firm operations.
This is an assignment-based opportunity designed for legal assistants who value the flexibility of remote work and enjoy supporting a variety of law firms and matters across the country. As client needs evolve, assignments and workload may vary based on business demand. This role is a good fit for a legal assistant who values professional flexibility and is comfortable with a workload that can fluctuate rather than requiring a guaranteed number of weekly hours from the outset.
When actively supporting clients, responsiveness is important. Because client needs can arise on short notice, legal assistants are expected to remain responsive to their active clients and Equivity managers within one hour during their stated availability.
If you're a legal assistant who appreciates autonomy, remote flexibility, and the opportunity to work with multiple legal teams, this assignment-based model may be a strong fit.

Responsibilities May Include
  • Setting up, organizing, and maintaining matters, contacts, calendars, tasks, and workflows in Clio
  • Configuring Clio features to improve law firm organization and efficiency
  • Creating and maintaining templates, custom fields, task lists, and matter structures
  • Supporting client intake and matter-opening processes
  • Managing legal calendars, deadlines, appointments, and attorney schedules
  • Organizing electronic client and matter files
  • Generating reports and tracking matters, tasks, and firm activity
  • Identifying opportunities to improve Clio workflows and administrative processes
  • Providing general legal administrative support based on client needs
  • Communicating professionally with clients, courts, vendors, and other legal professionals

We Are Looking For
  • At least one year of recent experience supporting attorneys or working in a law firm environment
  • Strong hands-on experience with Clio Manage and/or Clio Grow
  • Experience creating or improving Clio workflows, matter structures, templates, tasks, or related functions
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Availability to support at least 20 hours per week when assignments are available
  • Strong understanding of law firm processes and legal terminology
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and time-management skills
  • Comfort learning new technology and improving existing processes
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Access to a reliable Windows-based computer
  • Ability to respond within one hour during stated availability

Compensation and Work Structure
  • W-2 employment
  • Compensation: $23 per hour
  • Part-time, assignment-based work
  • Assignment volume and hours may vary based on client demand
  • Client assignments may take time to develop and are not guaranteed immediately upon joining
  • Benefits eligibility may depend on employment status and applicable plan requirements

Why Join Equivity?
At Equivity, you will join a nationwide team of legal professionals supporting attorneys and law firms across the country. You will receive ongoing support from Equivity’s internal operations and leadership teams while working remotely and applying your skills to substantive legal and administrative assignments.

Benefits include:
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid sick time
  • Employee discounts
  • Annual performance bonuses
  • Six-month pay reviews with potential hourly increases based on performance
  • Reimbursement of certain business expenses
  • Professional development and advancement opportunities
