Summary
Please note: This is a pool position. No guarantee of hours.
Implements, performs, and troubleshoots various tasks required to receive, process, and prepare patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by a pathologist. This includes logging, batching, and cutting, mounting, and complex staining procedures. Receives tissue specimens from surgical and diagnostic cases and sorts, logs, and prioritizes according to procedure. Trains other technicians.
Position Reports To: Anatomic Pathology Manager
Essential Functions
  1. Prepares microscopic tissue slides for the pathologists, including processing, embedding, cutting, and staining of paraffin and frozen tissue specimens.
  2. Coordinates with leadership to improve services to clients, meet or exceed regulatory requirements, and report deficiencies.
  3. Validates, implements, and performs special stains, and immunohistochemistry studies.
  4. Performs special procedures, i.e., lymph node, breast localization, bone marrow procedures, etc.
  5. Orients and trains histology laboratory assistants and technical staff, including safety procedures.
  6. Assists pathologists in X-raying blocks for calcification when requested.
  7. Meets or exceeds competency as defined in Level III checklist.
  8. Performs clerical procedures including billing, consult send-outs, CAP tallies, etc.
  9. Maintains appropriate amounts and types of inventory for Histology.
  10. Prepares and troubleshoots histology reagents.
  11. Maintains departmental procedure manuals and slide files for histology.
  12. Disposes of chemicals and tissue appropriately as outlined for the laboratory.
  13. Functions as a technical resource for non-certified histotechnicians in the department as needed.
  14. Understands and complies with code and evacuation procedures.
  15. Adheres to departmental patient handling performance standards.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.
Qualifications
Required:
  • Associate Degree in biology or related science and HT(ASCP) Certification or equivalent.
  • 3-year experience in histology.

Desired:
  • 5-years' experience in histology.
