Job Summary
Entry level journeyman roofing work in the maintenance and construction of various types of roofs. An employee in this class is responsible for repairing and replacing a variety of roof coverings. Work involves installing and replacing rainspouts, gutters, lightening rods, and lightening rod cables.
Essential Functions
  • Repairs and replaces roof coverings such as slate, pile or rubberoid roofs; performs simple carpentry work as needed in connection with roofing activities; installs and repairs rain spouts and gutters; repairs leaks on roofs and replaces sections of damaged roofs and waterproofs foundations, roofs and basements.
  • Repairs and maintains roof ventilators; installs and repairs lightening rods and lightening rod cables; carries materials to and from the job; utilizes ladders or scaffolds on job as needed; lifts heavy materials and equipment to the roof when necessary.
  • Runs the kettle; cuts and rolls the material and mops the roofing paper to the roof; repairs and installs copper drain pans; solders various types of metals including lead; performs various types of sheet metal work; estimates and orders material required for various jobs.

Other Functions
Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
  • Education equivalent to the completion f the twelfth school grade.
  • Three years of experience learning the roofing trade as an apprentice.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures governing the roofing trade.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of current materials and tools used in the roofing trade such as rubber roofs and durbagum.
  • Skill in the care and use of the tools of the roofing trade.
  • Ability to accurately follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to prepare records and reports of work performed.
