Job description

Summary

This is the most entry level position in the Auxiliary Operator series. This is a full-time, non-exempt, union position and reports to the Shift Supervisor. The Auxiliary Operator III must be willing to become a Bargaining Unit Member of the IBEW Local 614.This position is located in Philadelphia, PA. There are two vacancies for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Starts, stops, operates, monitors, and notes operating conditions of auxiliary equipment throughout the Schuylkill and Edison plants, including responsibility for burner operation.  
  • Reports conditions, trends, and abnormalities to Control Operator. 
  • Off loads fuel and receives deliveries as required. 
  • Blocks out equipment for maintenance; unblocks and retest equipment after completion of repair. 
  • Performs minor maintenance on valves, fans, etc. as required. 
  • Has working knowledge of fuel pumps, water treatment, and brine systems. 
  • Operates and regenerates resin beds to produce water for boiler operation; performs resin replacement as necessary. 
  • Maintains safe working conditions. Identifies, reports, and /or corrects unsafe conditions in work area. Able to use safety equipment necessary to perform job in safe manner. 
  • Performs housekeeping duties. 
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisors. 
  • Capable of performing operational rounds and required duties of the Auxiliary Operator position at Edison Station. 
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to identify system components and how those components operate and interact. 
  • Performs work of moderate difficulty with responsibility for brine water treatment system, operating auxiliary equipment and observation of gauges, controls and monitoring equipment and adjusting, and burner operations.  
  • Must recognize and correct boiler burner upset conditions. Duties also include performing necessary routine maintenance tasks such as equipment lubrication, and minor repairs to operating boiler auxiliaries such as fuel feed systems, pumps, fans etc.  
  • Performs housekeeping as necessary, confined space and LOTO functions including blocking, un-blocking, and testing equipment. 
  • Gives general direction to other auxiliary operators  
  • Receives supervision from Shift Supervisor and Control Operator.   
  • Performs work which affects reliability of other processes or services and may affect plant operations.  
  • Works mandatory overtime as required. Able to work rotating shift, odd hours, and overtime. 

Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or trade school diploma. 
  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience in military, utility, or heavy industry or a trade school graduate. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previously worked as an operator in a power plant, steam plant, refinery or other relatable  industrial facility.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and operate the plant auxiliary equipment.  
  • Working knowledge of the principles of combustion, boiler firing practices, steam turbines, water treatment, and chilled water systems. 
  • Working skill in the operation of boilers, burners, valves, pumps, fans, water treatment systems, chillers, and all auxiliary equipment related to steam and chilled water production.  

Other Qualifications

  • Ability to perform minor maintenance of the above listed equipment and safety related tasks such as blocking, unblocking, and testing for maintenance activities. 
  • Able to communicate well with others. 

Physical Requirements 

  • Must submit to a company provided physical and drug screening as part of pre-employment screening process. Must qualify to wear a respirator.
  • Must possess a valid driver license in good standing in order to operate a company vehicle. Must have and maintain a driving record meeting the standards of the company.
  • Able to handle up to fifty (50) pounds, unassisted. 
  • Able to climb and tolerate heights and confined space. 
  • Able to tolerate temperature extremes. 
  • Able to wear PPE, accurately read and interpret gauges, and capable to hear and understand audible alarms.Â
